The Deadline Office
In the perfect version of my life, I am a super-organized person with a place for everything and everything in its place. My house would be ready for a spread in House Beautiful at a moment's notice. Floors--freshly swept, polished or vacuumed. Books--not only alphabetized but separated into genres. Windows--sparkling. Garden--raked, weeded, planted and mulched. In reality, perfections happens for about fifteen minutes before and after company arrives.
And then there's deadline time. That's a whole other mess.
All of my house suffers while I'm under the crunch of a deadline, but my office bears the brunt. Piles of old manuscripts. Stacks of books in three categories: TBR--to be read; TBS--to be sold, given away or (god forbid) trashed; TBK--to be kept on the keeper shelf forever and ever. An old computer collects dust in one corner, a filing cabinet blockades the other.
Then there's my desk. In the case of my deadline desk, a picture says a thousand words. On second thought, perhaps only two words suffice: mass chaos.
See the rabbit? I bought him to remind me to write faster--time's a-wasting! Notice the kitchen timer?
That's to remind me to get up from the desk every hour. When I'm deep into a book, I tend to forget that blood circulation is a good thing. Eagle eyes will spot the Topaz Man bookmark behind the rabbit.
I recently discovered him tucked away in an old book. Thought the fella's chest needed a good airing. Then there're the notes for my WIP, the bag of floss picks (even personal hygiene moves to my office during deadline) and the photo of my river front to remind me that, yes, there is a life outdoors and the faster I finish my book the sooner I can be out in the sunshine.
What occupies your desk top? Are you a memento, lucky charm, sentimental type of person, or all business, all the time? Post your answer to the comments section and if you're a registered user, I'll choose one person to win a copy of my current release, Nobody's Hero, a Harlequin Superomance on the shelves now.

Hey Carrie!
Welcome! Glad to have you here. Great pictures and love your cover!
I wish I could say that deadlines are responsible for the mess on my desk, but it ain't so -- while we do keep the rest of the house and yard, etc more or less together, the desks seem to pile up, his and mine, and every now and then need to be cleared off -- I just did mine a few days ago, and it's so nice to see the wood, LOL. It's a gorgeous desk, usually buried under papers, bills, various items.
I do keep a cup there given to me by a good friend, a Boston Red Sox hat, some pictures, a binder given to me by my grad advisor for graduation (it's a pretty leather portfolio with embroidery that he brought me back from his research trips in South America), some pictures of Van Gogh's from the Met in NYC, and that's about it. Of course, I just rediscovered most of these things in the unburying...
I don't write there, because the height is wrong, but I have a little roll out portable desk that's adjustable that is on the side, so I work in the kind of "L" of the two desks.
Fun topic. :)

re: Hey Carrie!
Hi, Sam. Thanks to you and the rest of the Exploding Cigar(ettes) for inviting me over!
I always *try* to shovel out between books. Sometimes that just means organizing the piles. The photo only shows half of my desk. There's more and it's worse! LOL. My desk is an old door on top of two bookcases--way too much space available for clutter.

Carrie, welcome to Cigars!!
Carrie, welcome to Cigars!! It's great having you here, and I love your cover!! This looks like my kind of book.
I dream of someday having a desk...or any clear, uncluttered space to call my own! I work all over the house, in whichever room is currently unoccupied by other family members. I usually sit at the kitchen table, at least until the constant flow of traffic and noise gets to me, and then I move into the front room. I work at a laptop, so as long as there's a coffee table nearby where I can spread out (at least a little), then I'm good. The irritating part is when my husband decides to "tidy" and stashes all my research books and notes in one of our many bookcases, and never together where they're easy to find and retrieve. My dream is to have a small office, overlooking the river that runs behind the house, with a bookcase along one wall where I can keep my research material close by, and a filing cabinet for all the administrative stuff, and my covers framed and hung on the walls, and inspirational photos of Gerard Butler nearby. Hey, a girl can dream, right!
living the dream (sort of)
You just about described my office, Karen. Except my window looks out on the river only if I crane my neck. Mostly I see the propane tank--yuck. Which is probably good because I'd be much too distracted if I could see the river all the time. I'm impressed that you can work just about anywhere! That's a good skill to have.
I have a few inspirational photos on my bulletin board. None of Gerard Butler but I really ought to remedy that. Have you seen Dear Frankie? Loved it. And I've been listening to the soundtrack from P.S. I Love You throughout the current book.

Hi Carrie
My desk top is usually covered with papers but there are pictures of my two children that I show off periodically.
Uh...
Left to my own devices, my desktop would be covered with piles of paper, magazines, half-read books, coupons (potentially expired), and all kinds of random junk. My husband can't stand that sort of thing though, so periodically he does a sweep and clears it off. The piles end up piled elsewhere for me to deal with, and the desk usually sports just a few awards that the kids and husband have won for various things. And then there's actually space cleared for working--imagine that! ;)
Oh, and that's a very attractive cover!
re: Uh...
What is this I read? Husbands clean? Damn! Why did no one ever tell me?

In our house...
it's a really good thing that he does, otherwise I imagine we'd end up buried in random stuff and really be a viable candidate for Clean Sweep! As it is, we're in contention anyway ;) So mostly it's a good thing, and occasionally it's less good :)
re: In our house...
Hee. That reminds me of my dad's method of cleaning: throw everything away! I'm beginning to see the wisdom of that.

Hi Carrie,
I'm like Karen--I use the table, or I write in my chair. Why? Because my desk is so overloaded with stuff that I can't find the surface! But, this summer, I will get it organized. I will have a real office space...I hope :)
Can't wait to read your book!
Jeannie
I'm like Karen, too
I USED to have a desk, but it was so full of everything that it actually collapsed. Now my stuff is in a giant bookcase, lol, and I take the laptop wherever I can get away from the babies. We have fantasies that when we finally buy a house someday, it'll have either a big room hubby and I can split for an office or--lottery dreams--will have our own rooms for offices! Ahhhh, that'll be a GREAT day!
Till then, I'm sticking with the cubby bookshelf, lol.
My desk
Well, on the wall beside my desk hangs a huge corkboard. On it are various cards and postcards from friends. There's a pin that reads "Office Goddess", a list of phone numbers (neatly typed), some Words of Wisdom torn from those page a day calendars, a recall notice for my boss's truck (2 years later, still waiting for the part to come in), a ferry schedule, some take out menus, and smack in the middle a little hanging sign that reads "Put your big girl panties on and deal with it!"
Then there's the desk istsef. A holder for file folders (overstacked), a little 4-drawer organizer that holds various keys (neatly labelled but no bets the correct keys are in the correct cubbies), a stand for phone books with 3 file trays for paper, notebooks, stamps, and my Notary Public supplies. Another stand with my pencil cup (made for me years ago by a friend out of a soup can), a little cardboard box with cherubs on it for paperclips, a rock with a frog painted on it and a beautiful bookmark.
Next to my computer is a little basket of potpourri (I can't smell it but it looks pretty), a small box of resealable snack bags (in case I'm mailing tea to a friend), a pretty tea pot with pansies (I should take home, I haven't used it in a couple of years--just throw a teabag in a mug instead), a box of Kleenex, a photo of tulips, some pepppermint balm for headaches , a bottle of cherry blossom hand sanitizer, a tin of fairy cards, an old cell phone some gave me, and my stacking trays.
Sheesh! I think it's time to clean up!

My desk is pure chaos at
My desk is pure chaos at this time. I have pictures of my puppy, 2 rubber ducks, a candle, 2 teddy bears, books, a candy dish, kleenex, notebooks, pens/pencils, straws, a cap...should I go on.
The pics and candle and one bear are for sentimental reasons; the rest, as they say, is history-- just kidding. I need to get this desk top organized.
You have a good looking guy on the cover.
My desk is cluttered.
I have my computer, printer, lots of papers, framed photos, a Peter the Rabbit clock, silly putty, a Russian nesting doll, two paper weights, a stuffed dog, a candy dish, three calendars, cups, two mugs, tissues, and office supplies.
I feel so much better!
Collapsing desks, rabbit clocks, pencil cups...these desk descriptions are really comforting me.
Thanks for the nice comments on my cover. I wasn't sure at first (the guy reminded me of someone I once knew who was NOT a match for my hero), but I'm comforted there, too.
Speaking of covers, you've all got some great ones to the right. I'm especially loving Dee's KISS ME AGAIN and Shirley's REALLY SOMETHING (if ever a cover matched a title...). Then there are the abs at the bottom of the column. Um, good thing I've also got a fan on my desk. ;-)

Hello Carrie! Welcome. My
Hello Carrie! Welcome.
My desktop isn't too messy, but that's probably because I'm not there much. With a laptop, I tend to gravitate around the house and write wherever I'm most comfortable at the time. Sometimes it means I'm at my desk, but usually I'm on the couch, or sitting up in bed or even on the back patio, which is nice.

Junk
Hi Carrie,
My desk is full of junk mail, magazines, bills, figurines, stamps, stationery, empty soda cans, glasses, calender, laptop and books. Your desk is so much neater than mine.
Just finished reading
Just finished reading NOBODY'S HERO and absolutely loved it. I no longer have a desk but when I did it was in a classroom full of high school students so I had to watch what was on it. Really not much of anything other than stacks of papers and lesson plans.
re: Just finished reading
Thanks so much, Ellen. That made my day (or should I say night).
I imagine teachers have to watch out or they'd drown in paper. Each book I write manufactures a tower of paper--the original ms., the revised ms., the printout from my publisher. I reuse the backs of the pages for notes, but end up pitching a lot of it.

I just have a lot of messy
I just have a lot of messy papers that I jot website addresses, etc. on, and a beanie baby firefly as a mascot.
re: I just have a lot of messy
Hi, Estella (and all other commenters)! I have a gold firefly hanging in my window.
Every now and then, I go through the messy papers I've jotted stuff on. Half of it no longer makes sense because I can't remember what the original purpose was. :-D
