Happy Olympics Day!!
I've been thinking and thinking and thinking about the Olympics. I love the summer games. Much of my childhood was bloody hot, so I guess the summer games always have a place in my heart. It's full of all these physical things I always wanted to do---run fast, do flips, swim like a fish, gymnastics. The only thing missing is my girlhood dream of being a Solid Gold Dancer.
So, every four years, when the summer games come along, I get to revisit my delusions that I could ever do anything they do on tv. God knows yours truly can't keep up with the sprinters. I never had the rump to carry off those gymnastic suits--don't those look stiflingly hot?--and if I ever got in a pool near Michael Phelps I'm pretty sure they'd think I was having a seizure.
But wouldn't it be great? To have that physical ability. To be able to pull your foot over the top of your head and wave a ribbony thing or do backflips? To swim with that whole body wiggle or do a breaststroke without having a stroke in your breast? Or run so fast they need cameras to figure out it was you. That would be soooo bad ass.
Since it's Olympics Day, I'm curious. They say everyone has a talent. What's your special talent? If it's little known, even better!
Mine is that not only can I rub my tummy and pat my head at the same time, I also draw and shhhhh, I sing and dance quite daringly at the grocery store. My very special talent, though?
Looking innocent while giving hubby a quick grope in public. He jumps out of his skin and people think he's insane. As soon as I can pull off whistling, I'll be able to get away with anything!

Okay...
I did something weird.. posted a comment and then somehow deleted it -- maybe doing things and not knowing how I did it is my special talent, LOL.
Ah, the public grope. A classic.
I am not a huge watcher of the Olympics, especially in summer because I never wanted to sit so much by the TV then, even as much of a TV bug as I am, though I enjoy some of the events if I catch them, and Lomong is a local here, and who can resist cheering on Torres?
I don't know how much of it I'll actually watch, though the theme playing every five minutes on the Today Show is enough to make me want to poke something in my eye... I also don't think anyone should be using the games as a political statement to critique China, etc -- I'm all for political protest, but it's not appropriate to use the games to do it, IMO.
I can curl my tongue? And I can balance pretty well, low center of gravity, so I can put socks and shoes on free-standing, which to my surprise, not a lot of people can do. Of course, that doesn't keep me from inexplicably tipping over while walking or such at other random moments...
Sam
LOL!
I've heard people can't do that either. Hubby can't, but he says it's cause it's heavy set. I'm so flexible I can bend my legs just about anywhere. Arms too. I have no idea what normal is.
As for balance...er, no. I can't even wear watches because I knock into everything.
Very good, Sam! I cannot
Very good, Sam! I cannot balance on one foot, and sometimes not even on two feet! But I am pretty good with a pencil, if I do say so myself. I came close to attending the Rhode Island School of Design (I really wanted to illustrate children's books), but writing was my first true love, so I majored in Journalism at the University of New Hampshire, instead, and minored in fine arts. But I've spent many, many hours entertaining my children and their friends with drawings of princesses, mermaids, horses, dolphins, etc., for them to color.
Oh sure...
Go and have a *real* talent, like drawing. *G*
I guess aside of curling my tongue and standing on one foot, LOL, I could claim cooking. That's my "innate" talent, I guess. I just have a feel for how to handle food.
Sam
I see your cooking...
And raise it with a singing!
I can also burn food until it's impossible to recognize, lol.
My talents
I can fold my tongue in half. I can also roll it but I can fold the first third back on top of itself and keep it there for some little time.
I've mentioned before that I suffer from insomnia. When I awake, before I even look at the clock, I'll tell myself it's 1:10 or 2:47 or whatever time I think it is. I'm always within 2 minutes. TWO MINUTES of the correct time.
I can count off seconds. If you want to know how long ten seconds is, ask me, and then time it. I'll be within one second.
I am a human scale up to 20 lbs. This is more general but I can tell you if something is closer to 5 lbs, 10 lbs, 15 lbs or 20 lbs. I think this one comes from hauling children around. Once they hit the 20 lb mark, they were pretty much able to walk consistently on their own.
ani
Wow!
You all are some talented folks! That time-telling thing is pretty nifty, Ani, although I don't envy you any insomnia :(
I've always wanted to be incredibly athletic, but I'm not. I did seem to show a propensity for getting whacked by fast-moving balls--basketball, volleyball, softball... you name it ;)
As for real talents? Making sure my plate is clean? ;)
MWAAHAHAHAHHAAHAHHAAHAHAA!
MWAAHAHAHAHHAAHAHHAAHAHAA!
Love that talent! ;-)
CNN had a poll about the Olympics and it was like "What Olympic Sport are you best at" and they listed a bunch of them, ending with "sitting on the couch, watching the Olympics."
THAT is my sport ;-)
I have ZERO physical coordination and ZERO natural rhythm, so it's a darn good thing they pay me to write ;-). But I love watching the Olympics, and have really loved this year's a lot.
