What's Your Magic Number?
So I was talking to Sam last week and I was having one of those moments when you realize just how weird you really are. Just having several self-realizations at once and most of them were really dumb, skitchy things. The topic keeps coming up... Truth is, I'm persnickity. But really, have you ever tried to explain why you like or don't like something?
If it's not your husband, you'll find it's a lot harder than you think.
Like, I have never been a fan of the color green. I mean, I really don't like it. It makes me uncomfortable. I have no major psychological reason. No one abused me with it. No one dressed me like a leprechaun for years. My arch villain doesn't have green eyes or wear too much green spandex. About the worst association I can really give it is that grass makes me itchy. But I live in Southern California. Our grass is yellow. But for whatever reason I don't like the color, I love to see a beautifully grassy hillside.
Sort of the way my sister hates bread, but loves toast.
(Yeah, I don't really get that one either, but it makes sense to her.)
So, anyway, I'm talking to hubby about my story idea and he makes an astute point--"You have five of everything." At first, I laughed it off. Then I said, hey, I DO have five of everything. (I'll be correcting that shortly, I think. Maybe.) And then I found myself noticing fives all over my house. In most everything that makes me happiest and most comfy. There's even five members of my family. I'm the fifth daughter of a fifth daughter. I'm probably a fifth generation, who knows.
All of a sudden, I was having a moment out of the movie, "The Number 23".
Yes, I'm that much of a twitch.
After several days of coming to terms with it, though, I realize, it's just a number. It makes me comfy because I like round numbers. And I like things my way. Five is just the right number for me.
What about you? Have you ever considered what numbers might be secretly organizing your life?

Hey Dee
Dee--I'm going off the number topic and back to the color topic. People gravitate towards colors that make them look good. Turn a child loose in a clothing department before they've been warped by fashion magazines and the latest "in" color and they'll pick out clothing that goes with their coloring. (Or that has a cartoon on it--one or the other.)
If people look at their eyes closely (a mirror helps here) the little color flecks and the darker ring around the iris are all colors they can wear well. Navy is one of my best colors. The ring around my brown iris is navy blue.
Numbers--I do reps when I exercise, so I'm a 7 or 10 person there. A lot of other things are 3's--except for shoes. My organizational number for shoes is in the hundreds, I think.
By the way--hot couple on Midnight Legacy.
LOL, Jeannie
Aren't they hot? When I made the novel trailer, I found several more pictures of them. They're an excellent match for my characters. (Though one wonders if the chick swears as much as my heroine, lol)
I have my mother's Indian eyes--so dark they're almost black. Which, incidentally, I've always been drawn to, so you have a point. People always want me to wear yellow. I wear green only when there's absolutely nothing else. Unless it's teal. Love teal.
7 is one of those love it/ hate it numbers for me. I require symmetry in all things, so 7 items can be balanced around the central item, but otherwise, it's an odd number and I keep wanting to fix it, lol.
I do like 3s. Picture a candelabra--balance. Ahhhh.
Yeah, I'm sick.
Dee
THE NUMBER 23!!!! Loved that
THE NUMBER 23!!!!
Loved that movie. :)
I found the number three in a recent book all over the place. I don't know why, but everyone had been alone for three years, had three people in their offices, whatever. Three was all over the place.
But in my real life I can't think of a number that rules me...
M
The book was probably...
written by someone as twitchy as me.
I often crave being "normal", or at the least, not ruled by quirks. Or even as many quirks. (My sisters call me "Monk")
But then I think...how would I know what to do?
You're a braver soul than me. I like to think of myself as, "Life, with training wheels".
Dee
haha, no, *I* wrote it! So
haha, no, *I* wrote it! So maybe three is my number?
M
Hands over training wheels...
LOL, take a look around your house. How many things are in threes? Like, all my picture frames are balanced out across the width of my furniture. Either in twos, threes or fives. I noticed if I stare at a room from, say the elevated position of the stairs... boom, all kinds of unconscious patterns.
It's a great way to freak yourself out!
Dee
LOL
I think I might have mentioned in that conversation that the only numbers that really affect my life are the ones in my checking account and royalty statements, LOL.
But seriously, I like twos (couples) and fours (double date) -- two seems to work, three usually means trouble. Four and you are okay again. I think of this in terms of our animals, etc -- two cats get along, three fight. Four and they are fine again. I think it often works the same with people -- two, they pal up, three, someone always feels left out, four, and you have a nice group again, a double date, etc.
I do like the number 13, since I met Mike on Friday the 13, and I realized when we went to Chicago, our seat numbers on the flight added to 13, and we were, quite unconsciously, married on 6/7 -- another 13. :) But, if you go by numerology, 13 = 1+3 which is 4, a number of stability and security(chairs, tables, animals, etc are all four-legged), and one of my tarot guides says fours are the numbers of natural order, personal logic and reasoning. Fours are also the plateaus, the resting places between change and stasis, or, the point of conflict between the need for change and the need for order and security, though they also offer the chance to leave the past behind, and move on to greener pastures. :) I'd say this is a definite theme in life for both of us, and has been since we met, usually pertaining to jobs and family, not each other. LOL But I think the stability of our relationship has provided that steady plateau for us to deal with all of the other changes ... however, it also provides a comfortable place that sometimes we don't want to shake up, like thinking about moving or taking new jobs...
For your interest in fives, they are the human and sensory input, the opportunity to put our energy into creative, sensory projects and the challenge to perceive life differently, hopefully not getting stuck in old patterns. As a midpoint, they are about adjustment and adaptation...
Sam
I was gonna ask you...
what 5 meant. So, I'm always looking for challenges? I live in the midpoint. I kinda like that. It would mean I've always got options!
After reading you're info on 2s & 4s, at least I know why I'm drawn to even numbers. (5 is special because it's both odd and even, for those who are wondering why I like 5 so much.) Stability appeals even more than options!
Hmm...
Interesting, Dee! I'm not sure anything rules in our house, but I do find ways to justify to myself why whatever number is a good one--for instance, the 13th is our anniversary :) Or five is the number of people in our family, eight is the number of infinity, and so on. Not sure it's made any real difference ;)
Back to colour for a minute
For me it's orange. Orange is not a colour I'm drawn to. I've worn it on occasion (it actually does look good on me) but I'm very self concious (hope I spelt that correctly) the entire time.
My one number is 9. It's the number I use when someone says Pick a Number. It's what I consider my lucky number.
But I don't know that I live my life around that number. I can't think of any 9-clusters in my life (maybe dust bunnies).
But, I count. I'm a counter. As I go up and down the stairs in my house, I count them. I've lived there for 18 years and the number has never changed but I count anyway.
As I put away glasses, plates, cutlery, I count. And if the number isn't correct, I check to see where the missing item is (in the fridge? Oh that's okay then).
And another odd thing I do is the clocks I live by (the one I wake up to and the one in my car) are set fast. My morning clock by 10 minutes and my car by 8. I can look at the time posted and automatically make the conversion in my mind so I'm unsure why I do this but I do it nonetheless.
Interesting topic!
ani
My first thoughts are...
that the stairs are a multiple of nine and that your advanced setting of the clock averages 9 minutes fast. LOL!
Counting is a self-soothing, I think. Like my way of looking for patterns. Something to make us feel comfortable. I love patterns. I even vacuum in patterns.
Boy...y'all are going to be afraid to hang out with me, lol.
Dee
Interesting!
Though I can't say I have any color or number aversions. Well, maybe purple. I sorta cringe when I think about it. LOL But, and this might be off the subject and hopefully not of any offense to anyone, but I'm not particularly fond of blonde women. Blonde guys on the other hand...bring it on, baby. Especially if the hair is short and spiky. ;) I think my nose wrinkles up around women though, because every girl/woman I've ever been dumped for was pretty much a bleached blonde. Which, I suppose, means that subconsciously I'm a grudge-holder. Huh... I didn't realize that 'til now. :)
ROFL, Sassa!
See! It's amazing what all those unconscious reactions can lead to when we investigate them. My only aversion to blonde women is that so many of them here in Orange County are taller and thinner and have more money than me. But there's several brunettes with those same qualifications, so I guess I just don't like tall, pretty, rich women. Well, not at first, lol.
The hard part for me is trying to stop allowing what makes me twitch get the better of me.
:)
Dee
Actually 23 is my favorite
Actually 23 is my favorite number I don't really know why
Yes, on the numbers
I currently have a special affinity for the number 23, but that'll end soon :). Hm... I like the number three. Growing up, I actually had a strong preference for even numbers... then in high school, I gravitated to the number 3. I don't necessarily have to have that number - but I like doing things that are multiples of three, or involve three. I'll eat three of something (if it makes sense to) - or some multiple of 3. e.g. 9 crackers. 3 cookies.
One thing people find the strangest - the times I set my alarm for. 9:03 - or appointment reminders, 3:33, 10:29 (and 1+2+9= 12). I'm not too obsessive about it though. (I don't think. Haha.)
