Character Interview: Declan Gates in the Hot Seat
I always interview my characters before I start writing. The process helps me discover unexpected facets of their character and makes them come alive for me.
The interview template I use is from eHarlequin.com and the example here is from my current book Black Sheep Billionaire. Sometimes the characters will change as I write. In this case, I think the Declan Gates who stared me down when I tried to delve into his psyche is very much the one who showed up for the book.
At least this is Declan before he runs into the heroine. Lily Wharton is the only woman he ever loved—and meeting her again changes everything.
Name: Declan Gates
Age: 32
Birth date: 1976
Height: 6’1
Weight: 180
Body type: Athletic, muscled but not heavy, the right kind of body for kicking ass.
Hair: Raven black, shiny.
Eyes: Ice pale, glittering, sometimes hard and reflective like a mirror, sometimes glittering with raw emotion.
Nose: Assertive but not long and aristocratic.
Mouth: Arrogant, mobile, secretive. He’s skilled at hiding emotion and he’s been honing those skills all his life. Good at telling people what they think they want to hear.
Clothes: Only the best. Sharp tailor made suits, high-tech sportswear for kicking someone’s ass in his free time. Has no leisure time and doesn’t want any.
Personality Profile:
Strengths: Fierce determination, grit, doesn’t care what anyone thinks, relentless energy, a fighter who fights harder when he’s down (which is rare), pursues everything with intense passion.
Weaknesses: Ruthless, determined to win at all costs, has shut off feelings as a weakness, can be cruel, hard, unrelenting.
Ambition: Achieved every ambition he’s ever had, which is getting boring.
Beliefs: To the victor go the spoils.
Self-Perception: Sees himself as a hard-nosed businessman, practical, hard-working, good at figuring out all the angles. Knows a lot of people don’t like him, but it’s always been that way and he has no interest in trying to butter them up, in fact it makes him want to give them a good reason to hate him some more.
How others see him: Ruthless, cold, scary, impressive. Woman go crazy over him because he’s gorgeous and rich. He’s not all that interested in them except for sex.
Hobbies: Loves one-on-one sports where there’s a clear winner and loser, ie. only likes boxing if it’s a knockout, not a decision. Will try anything that sounds intense, but is usually disappointed.
Moral values: Get yours before the other guy tries to steal it. It’s a dog eat dog world, make sure you’re the one doing the eating.
Eccentricities: Would deny that he has any, likes to think of himself as a machine.
Most defining characteristic: Loves a good fight.
Marital status: Single, never married. Has dated countless woman but usually loses interest after the first screw. Hates obligation, the feeling that he “has to” call someone or see them again, since he almost never wants to.
Educational background. Degree in economics from Dartmouth—ran his own business and bought several companies while there. Wasn’t there for much of his last two years but aced his courses anyway so they had to pass him.
Occupation: Corporate Raider—buys companies and usually breaks them up and sells the pieces
Food preferences: Steaks, rare fish, a carnivore.
Drink preferences: Neat iced vodka
Car: BMW
Pets: none, hates obligation
Present problem: Infuriating WASP ice princess Lily Wharton wants to buy his ancestral pile. Well, her ancestral pile, and he’s damned if he’ll let her have it. He’s looking forward to seeing it fall down.
How does this problem get worse—She’s very determined—this only fires up his fighting instincts and makes him want to tangle with her—he wants to steal her company, screw her, then watch the house fall down. But his plan isn’t working—he screws her and wants more. She’s taking over the house whether he likes it or not—she gets it powerwashed, clears weeds, repairs broken windows, etc—and people in town are starting to talk about it as hers.
How does this problem get resolved? She breaks open his hardened heart and shows him there is life outside of battle. He starts a new life with her, in their home which she’s transformed.
Synopsis about childhood:
Grew up in The Big House as member of despised Gates family. House reputedly cursed so that all the men would turn bad. His father drank heavily and was killed in a suspicious hunting accident. His mother was cold and unloving and ran their business in a way that made the townspeople hate her more. After her husband’s death she closed the factory, mostly out of spite and a lot of people had to move away to find work. Declan is the youngest. His mother drove her sons away—she hated men (and everyone else) and gave them no love and affection (or money). His older brother died of a drug overdose after living homeless on the streets of NY. His younger brother was killed in a barroom brawl in Bangkok. Everyone Declan has ever tried to love has hurt him and he has no interest in getting anywhere near that kind of sensation again. He’s thrown himself into his work and he’s happiest when he’s far too busy to think about anything else.
Whew, that was long! And he sounds kind of scary, doesn’t he? Really, he’s a lovely guy under that ruthless exterior, trust me :wicked grin: He just needs to get over his terror of intimacy… I think the only thing that changed from this interview is that Declan ultimately went to Yale, not Dartmouth. Funnily enough the heroine turned out quite different. The Lily in the book is much more down to earth and tough than the person I first interviewed.
Thanks to Sam for coming up with the idea for this blog and Bron Jameson for reminding me of it in her blog last Thursday! Someone (you have to be a registered user!) who leaves a comment will win a signed copy of Black Sheep Billionaire.

This is very interesting!
I never even knew they had this at eHarl! I'm going to print it out and use it for my current hero -- do they have it for heroines as well?
It draws such a clear picture -- I love your examples, ie, boxing, they are so telling.
My question: Do you find yourself discovering new things about him, layering in unexpected things (and if so, what were they? some examples?) while you write? Or do you stick directly to the interview?
Sam
It's the same for heroes and heroines
I love all the questions it asks because they really do help me discover aspects of the character that I might have missed. Ie the one about pets. Declan at the outset of the book wouldn't trust himself with the responsibility of a pet--though he would have no idea that it's because he's afraid to care for anything and doesn't have any faith in his ability to achieve intimacy. I'm often surprised by the car they drive ie in Black Sheep Billionaire, Declan drives a rather predictable BMW sports car, but the environmentally conscious heroine Lily usually travels by mass transit (she lives in Boston) and borrows her mother's ancient station wagon when she's in Maine--she's not at all status conscious and Declan notices and admires that about her during the book.
I was definitely surprised by all the fighting imagery when I first did this interview, but I think it really expressed all the pent up emotion and energy in Declan that really needed to find a new and more loving outlet!

I love this story!
Declan is one of Jen's heroes that was extremely fun to get to down - layer by layer (especially when the clothes came off). I am one of Jen's crit partners, and I love how she creates her heroes. I'm totally in love with them!! Declan is no exception. He's definitely a HUNK in every aspect. WOO-HOO!

LOL
Thanks Phyllis!! Your own heroes are smokin' hot too

form?
Jen, can you tell me where that interview form is on eharl? I couldn't find it...
Sam
I couldn't find it either!
It was always hard to find as it was buried under "Characterization" in the "Learn to write" section, but today I couldn't find it at all. Maybe they've moved it since they redid the site. I had just printed it out a while ago and I work from that. I included the entire form in my blog post, though, so it's all here if you just want to copy the questions :-)

ooo
He sounds like one of my favorite types of heroes lol This book sounds really good.

He was fun to write!
Let me know what you think of Declan if you read it :-D

I agree he does sound fantastic as well as the book
Fabulous Idea!
This is a great idea for characters. I think I might hand out the questionnaire to potential friends. Too bad I didn't have it when dating, I could have had fewer bad dates.
LOL!
I can see how it could come in very useful for screening out potential boyfriends. No guarantees they'd tell you the truth, though ;-)

What a fun interview!!
Declan sounds dangerous, and definitely desirable. Must be my wild side coming out. :-) How is it you pronounce 'Declan'?
I look forward to reading the story - sounds fun!
I pronounced it Deh-clun
With the emphasis on the first syllable. (I'm not very good at these phonetic things! That's more or less it). It's kind of an unusual name and I liked the hardness of it for this character :-)
Jen

Thanks, Jen!
That's kinda how I guessed it. I always make up pronunciations when I don't know what they really are, but since I had the source, I thought I'd ask! :-)

Great idea and a good way to really get to know your characters.

Thanks Georgie! I find it really helpful to get some insight into my characters before I start writing.

Dossier
Hi Jennifer,
I love your profile of Declan. He sounds like an intriguing hero, cold yet full of energy.
Thanks Jane!
He was so clear in my mind right from the beginning. The most fun was seeing the effect the heroine had on him--that was the beginning of the end of his cool :-)

That was very interesting. I have never seen an author profile of a character that was so thorough.
I love this set of questions
I've heard of some that are even more thorough, but I like to leave some stuff open to the imagination before I start writing too :-)

Character interview
What a great character interview, Jen. This is great! Really interesting and illuminating-especially regarding the synopsis of his childhood! I made a template in word to use for my next WIP. Thanks for sharing!
LindaC
Great, I'm glad it helped
Often very little from the synopsis of childhood makes it into the book. In Black SHeep Billionaire you don't learn anything about his brothers except that they are dead. I never used the information on how they died, but I like to know that stuff anyway. I guess It's like setting the emotional scene in my mind.

Loved this!
I would've named my daughter Declan, had she been a boy. :)
This interview was great, and a great tool for writing. Loved your description of what changes as you write!

Funny!!
That is really nice... the facts about your hero... I have to say is it must be importnat to know ones hero very well :) before starting the writing!
Definitely helps to know the hero well
Though they always throw some curveballs at me once I start writing anyway. Guess that keeps this writing thing exciting!

Wish I could help...
on finding the form. Learn To Write shuffles their own content and they were planning a turnover for the new year as well. And our eHQ Q&As have been stuck in limbo for the time being. I'll see if I can find something. :)
But I really did like this book (Despite my hubby informing me there was no way that guy could make billions off Black sheep, lol) and it was neat to see how you came around to Declan. He was a fun read!!
Dee
Aha! The eHarlequin guru is in the house
I loved that Learn to Write section so I hope it comes back. I swear, I've used this set of interview questions for EVERY book I've written since I saw it (including those that will never see the light of day).
I'm so glad you liked the book! And tell DH I think there could be a really hot market in organic black sheep's wool. "Dye free" is a big seller these days and black never goes out of style :wicked grin:

Very cool!
Hi, Jennifer,
That's the first time I've seen such a thorough introduction to a character! I admit he sounds intriguing, although yes, he also sounds a little scary! I love reading about heroes like him, but I would SO be scared silly in real life! I imagine Lily would have to pretty tough to hold her own in a relationship with him!
Sounds like an exciting read, for sure!
Hi Fedora!
Lily knows there's another side to Declan because they were very close as children, so I guess that's why she's not TOTALLY scared stiff. I would be though :-)
Jen

Ahh...
OK, that totally makes sense! (I'm sorry--I don't know how I missed that in the intro!) Oooh... I love stories where the hero and heroine have shared history--gonna have to get this one!
I absolutely love
this story. Jen, you did a fabulous job like always. I use a character interview sheet, but a bit different from yours. I hope EHarl comes back with your version. Now if only I could have such a detailed interview to sort out GMCs. lol You're an inspiration and I'm glad to say "I knew you when."
Thanks Anne-Marie!
LOL at the GMC's. I do sometimes use Deb Dixon's chart myself :-)

Character Interviews
Jen, that was fantastic and very informative! It made me want to read "Black Sheep Billionaire" even more. I forgot to put it in my purse coming to work this morning. I usually read back and forth on the bus coming to work. So tomorrow, I'll have it for sure. Looking forward to Declan and Lily's story. Sounds very interesting! Jamie
Thanks Jamie!
Do let me know what you think of the book!

Tough Guy
I think he will be a hard nut to crack. It should be one interesting story. I hope your heroine has a lot of patience.
The heroine's probably the
The heroine's probably the only one who could crack him. She's the only person who knows who he really is underneath, and who can make him vulnerable. That's why it was so much fun to put them together :rubs hands together with glee:

Oh my goodness
Hi Jennifer -
I really enjoyed reading that interview -and thanks for sharing it. I'm also impressed you interview every character -and what fun! Poor Declan - he's the tortured dark hero x2! I'm definitely looking forward to reading this book!
