A Book by Any Other Name...
So I just turned in a completed manuscript that's due for release later this year. The working title is Body Double, but my editor said it needs to be changed, with a focus on the hero. I really like the title, and I think it's pretty perfect for the story, which goes something like this:
Aspiring actress Ivy James is thrilled to be cast opposite Hollywood's latest golden boy in a military adventure that's packed with romance. But when the real-life hero shows up on the movie set as a technical consultant, her acting skills take a vacation. He’s big and tough, and exudes a raw masculinity that makes her leading man look like a green recruit. How can she possibly concentrate on her acting with Garrett Stokes watching her every move? Worse, the director says her love scenes lack chemistry, and demands she take a few days off to find inspiration. She decides to go right to the source, and asks Garrett to coach her through the intimate scenes, even insisting he step in to play himself...
I completely suck at titles. Here are some of the ones I came up:
Feature Attraction
Leading Man
Close Shot
The Stand-In
And here are some that well-meaning family and friends have come up with (this is especially fun to do after a few drinks):
Oscar My Wiener (as in the Oscar Awards...get it?)
Lights, Camera, and Lots of Action
Reel Lust
The Money Shot
So here's hoping the editorial department can come with something a little more catchy and creative! Here are some of my favorite titles by other authors:
All Over You by Sarah Mayberry
Willingly Bedded, Forcibly Wedded by Melanie Milburne
Virgin Slave, Barbarian King by Louise Allen
So I'm interested in knowing...do titles have an impact on whether or not you buy a book, and what are some of your own favorites??

Title
The title matters not at all to me in buying a book. I only think about the title after the fact, when I've read the book and the title's gained more meaning. I know, I know - literature teachers all over the world would say, "The title is the beginning of the book experiences, the foundation on which you build the reader's world." Not me.
So favorite titles are often attached to favorite books: THE TIME TRAVELER'S WIFE, MYSTIC AND RIDER, BURDEN OF DESIRE. Half the time I can't remember the title and have to scour my memory in search of it when I want to recommend the book.
I'm looking forward to reading your next book, whatever the title! Let's hope you get a catchy one, and a cover that tops FLYBOY!
Margaret
Thanks, Margaret!
Margaret, I think I'm actually a lot like you; I don't always remember the title after I've read the book, and it doesn't usually play a big part in my decision to buy the book. But if the title has some kind of double entendre that only becomes apparent after I've read the book, I do enjoy that. As far as the cover for this next book...I did ask if I could have the same cover model as Flyboy and was told to take a number and get in line, LOL! Seems he's a popular boy!
Thanks!
Karen, thank you -- reading the funny titles started my morning off with wild laughter... ;>
Titles are tough -- I have titled all but two of my own books, and sometimes the title comes to me, it's sometimes the first thing I ever think about a book. This happened yesterday when I got a book idea, but it was just a title that popped into my mind -- and then I thought, hey, cool title, and thought of a story to match, and sent off a quickie pitch to eds, and it's interesting, because I think the story sometimes comes easier when the title comes first...
Some of my favorite titles... Before I Melt Away (Isabel Sharpe) would be my very favorite Blaze title ever, and probably I'd pick my Pick Me Up (is it tacky to pick my own, LOL?), because I loved how it worked as a double entendre, telling the reader to pick it up. :) My very least favorite title of my own was Hide and Seek which was retitled by marketing, and I think it had nothing to do with the book and it was also my worst selling book -- correlation there? Maybe. Titles are a powerful marketing mechanism, I think.
Recently, I also liked Wendy Roberts' Remains of the Dead, and all the Charlaine Harris titles.
Titles do matter to me -- it's the first thing I see, probably before the cover art. A clever title will draw me in, so I guess I'm opposite of Margaret on that, but it's interesting to see how everyone thinks about it.
I really like Superromance titles, too, because they are simply descriptive, like Presents but not as over the top. You look at the title, you know what the book is about.
Fun topic. :)
Sam
Thanks, Sam!
Oh, good; it's nice to start the morning with a good laugh! Yes, some of the titles that were presented to me just had me doubled over. You know, I love your title, Pick Me Up, too. But I hadn't thought of it in the way you mentioned (pick me up, buy me!). I kinda thought of it like, "Ooh, I'm feeling kind of bleh...this WOULD be a nice pick me up!" I totally love the Presents titles, too...they tell it all!
Sometimes...
But not usually. Covers usually have a slight impact, but titles not so much. Though looking at my bookshelf I do see a few that I remember caught my eye because of the title: Lisa's Hard and Fast--blatant innuendo there. I dove into that book anxiously awaiting the "hard and fast" part. :) Sarah's Take On Me--reminded me of the song, but I also couldn't resist the promise of a challenge. And The Right Brother by Patricia McLinn because I can't resist a story that involves the heroine being naughty with an ex's friend or brother. I just twisted like that. :)
FWIW, of your list, I like Feature Attraction best. What about Lights, Camera,...Action! LOL! That was the first thing that came to mind after reading the blurb. I stink at titles, too. :)
Thanks, Sassa!
Yes, I like Feature Attraction, too. Another one that a friend suggested was Action Hero or Reel Action Hero. They just don't sound that sexy. I'm definitely open to suggestions!
Getting Some Action?
Heh, sorry, couldn't resist...
Actually, having read part of this ms, I can assure everyone that the story is scorching hot, and I can't wait to see it on the shelf, no matter the title...
How about Overnight Sensation?
Sam
Thank you!
Oh, thank you for the vote of confidence, Sam! Boy...you're good!! I love that title!
Love that one!
I think Sam is definitely onto something with Overnight Sensation!
Oh yeah, I totally agree.
Oh yeah, I totally agree. Sam, if you don't mind, I'm going to suggest this to my ed., and am definitely sending you something yummy and chocolatey for your creative thinking!
I love it!
I second, or third, or whichever Sam's title!!
Thanks for the giggles this morning. Titles are kind of a unique art, aren't they? So many things have to be packed into that tiny little space. I'm trying to think of some of my favorite titles now, and of course, I am coming up totally blank. A title may draw me to a book if I am browsing, but it won't keep me there if the description doesn't look interesting. LOL - one exception, though. I was at a book sale the other day and saw a book titled "The Wood Nymph and the Cranky Saint". I had to buy it. I have absolutely no idea what it is about (haven't read it yet), but the title makes me giggle!
Titles
Hi Karen,
Titles have an effect on me--particularly when people ask what I'm reading. I don't mind saying I'm reading Hide and Seek or even Oscar My Wiener but it embarrasses me to say I'm reading Love's Splendid Fury. Those '80's titles bothered me and usually the title had zip to do with the story.
I love Blaze titles. I find them witty and suggestive and they almost always make me want to pick up the book and read more.
I like Body Double but here’s a few suggestions, although none are as good as OMW~
Stand In Stud
Show Me How
Role Play
Cue Me
Jeannie
I love Overnight Sensation.
I love Overnight Sensation. Way to go, Sam!
Wow!
Okay, I obviously need to hang out with you ladies more often! Jeannie, these are great! I especially love Cue Me! Thank you, thank you! And I agree with you on the Blaze titles; they do a great job with them.
The Name Game
You know, I may just toss all of these into the ring for consideration. If one of them gets selected, I'll give the creator a free copy of the book when it comes out and a nod on the acknowledgment page. I have two ladies in my office who I love to play the name game with; they're great at coming up with character names!
Titles may get me to pick up
Titles may get me to pick up a book and read the blurb but they themselves won't get me to buy a book. And unfortunately for me I don't remember titles after I read the book. If someone asks me if I've read such and such a book by giving me the title I have no idea if I've read it. You have to tell me what happens in the book.
Well...
I'm with everyone who's said that the title may catch my eye, but it won't make or break the book, and I'm not sure I remember them afterwards (unless the title's a mini-plot-synopsis, as the Presents titles often are!)
I do enjoy the clever and "punny" ones, especially if they fit the tone of the book, and for a series of books, I do kind of like when the titles go together (just because they help me remember what I'm looking for! Janelle Denison's Wilde ones, for instance.)
I'm terrible at coming up with titles, but Sam's got some great options--Cue Me and The Stand-In are cute :)
I like Overnight Sensation
I like Overnight Sensation and Feature Attraction! :)
The only title I've had with Spice that wasn't changed was Dirty. Every single one after that was changed. I even changed the title of Tempted from my original title to Perfect in anticipation that they'd want a change --and then they changed THAT!!! To Tempted! LOL
So, I already came up with list of alternate titles for my next few Spices. Just in case. :)

The title is only a means to identify the book when I want to buy it.
Morning all
I was gone all day yesterday, but happy to see people thought I made a good suggestion -- just threw that out on my way out the door, which is maybe when the good ideas come, on the fly.
Always easier to think about someone else's work than your own isn't it?
Sam
Boy, you got that right :).
Boy, you got that right :).
I really like Lights,
I really like Lights, Camera, and Lots of Action lol
The story sounds really good, I can't wait to read it now. I love those kind of books.
Titles don't really impact me, I don't pay much attention to them lol

Thinks of a title as she goes out the door. Sam, I want you poised at the door when I have to name my next book.

Titles
Hi Karen, Titles usually don't influence my purchase of a book but, I have to admit that Flyboy and Pick Me Up, did catch my eye. For the first time in a long while, the covers really made me sit up and take notice.
So when is your book going to be released? I'm sitting here drooling already. Looks like I'll be having another night of lost sleep. Oscar My Wiener? LMAO at that one. Mads:)
Thanks, Mads! Overnight
Thanks, Mads! Overnight Sensation (yes, my ed gave the title a huge thumbs up! THANK YOU, SAM!) is scheduled for release in Sep 08.
