There's No Place Like Home
Call me crazy, but I am so happy that my vacation is over! I just returned from seventeen days of R&R, and I'm more exhausted than I've ever been in my life! What is it about vacations that suck the energy out of us (or maybe that’s just me)? Don’t get me wrong – it was an utterly fabulous vacation from beginning to end.
It began with seven days on the Gulf coast of Florida with my husband and kids, staying at my parents’ house and going to the beach every day. Then we spent four days in Orlando, visiting the theme parks, before my family returned to New England. I can’t begin to tell you how hard it was for me not to join them; I cried as they went through the security checkpoints and disappeared from view. I love spending time with my family and I love having them all to myself when we go away; they’re my captive audience, and vice versa. I felt so lonely after they left. Of course, by then I’d been away from my own home and bed for ten nights and I was more than ready to go home with them. I didn’t think I’d be able to muster a second wind for the next phase of the vacation!
The next morning, however, I joined my sister for a seven-night Caribbean cruise aboard Royal Caribbean’s Freedom of the Seas. It was my first cruise, and I had no idea what to expect. Certainly not a ship of such gargantuan proportions! It had four swimming pools, a golf course, a rock climbing wall, a wave pool for surfing, and an ice-skating rink, not to mention all the "standard" accoutrements like theaters and fitness centers and lounges. It was the Titanic on steroids. This is the largest cruise ship ever built (or so I’m told). It accommodates 4,300 passengers and 1,500 crew members on fifteen passenger decks. This is equal to the population of my hometown! I have to say that for the most part, I didn’t have the sense that there were that many people around me, except for when we were looking for an empty lounge chair on the top deck. By 10:00 each morning, every chair on every deck was occupied. I’ve never seen so much bare flesh in my life.
The food was another example of excess. The buffet breakfasts and lunches were unbelievable. Our head waiter said the kitchen prepared 15,000 meals every day. What amazed me was how fresh everything was, from the juicy melon to the fresh-baked croissants, to the mouth-watering desserts. I was intensely curious about what life aboard was like for the crew. Were their staterooms adequate? How many hours did they work each day? Where had they come from, and how had they found their way aboard? Were they able to disembark and do the tourist thing at each port, or were they required to stay on the ship? Did they enjoy their work, or did they look at the passengers with contempt? I wanted to take a tour of the working part of the ship. I wanted to see the kitchens, the laundry, the food storage areas, the bilge, the engine rooms, the crew staterooms, but was told this was impossible for security and health safety reasons, which I understood.
I sensed a distinct hierarchy amongst the crew, from the people who cleared away the dishes, to the waiters and beverage servers, to the stateroom attendants, spa and health professionals, to the entertainment performers. While nearly every crew member was kind to a fault, I had one unpleasant encounter with a beverage server who adamantly refused to give me a small pot of coffee to bring back to my room; he wanted me instead to carry two sloshing mugs through the ship and down six flights to my deck. I didn’t prevail in this little battle of wills; he did. It was a small thing, but left me close to tears, which was even more ridiculous. By then, I’d been on the ship for five nights, and was really missing my family and was feeling a little strung-out from too many late nights.
As much as I loved being with my sister and as much as I loved the islands, I couldn’t wait to get home. I have friends who love cruises. They love that it’s all-inclusive and they don’t have to think about where they’ll go to eat, or what they’ll do for entertainment or activities. They love going to bed in one port, and waking up in another. I totally understand the appeal, but I’m not sure I’m the cruising type. But maybe, if my family was with me…
What about you? Does a vacation away from the kids and hubby hold any appeal for you, or are you like me…a home body who isn't happy unless the family is there?
P.S. - I maintained a travel blog while I was away, so if you're interested in seeing more, check it out at www.karencruises.blogspot.com.

Welcome back Karen!
It sounds like it was quite an adventure, but I agree, I would have a hard time being away from Mike and home for that long. Now, being away WITH Mike is a different thing altogether -- sometimes we are off on vacation and I could stay for a very long time -- but being off on my own? No. Maybe a few days and that would probably be my limit. I've only ever gone off on an overnight, though, so I don't know. Maybe if I was busy enough or was doing something exciting, I could stay longer, but I would definitely want to get back home. We've never done a cruise. I don't like the idea of being all confined in one place; I like to get out and explore and find out about places. I might like doing one of those smaller Alaskan cruises, though, or something like that.
I enjoyed all your observations -- I can see the cruise ship book coming soon... ;)

Hi Sam! Yes, it was quite an adventure, and I had a great time, but I think it would have been more fun with John and the girls. I also went through serious Internet withdrawal on the ship!! I racked up a wireless bill of $145, and that was just for less than five hours of total internet time! And half of that time was spent just waiting for pages to load. Very frustrating.
Hey, Karen! My husband
Hey, Karen! My husband worked on a cruise ship before I met him, and he told me there is a definite hierarchy. I've been on two cruises and will never go on another -- I don't like feeling half-nauseous all the time. ;)
I've never gone away from my family for more than four or five days, and those were to conferences and once a verrrry short (but working) trip to Las Vegas. I'm not sure what I'd think about a week. I might love it! Haha!

Your husband worked on a cruise ship?? Wow! I'll bet he has some stories to tell! I think cruises can bring out the best and worst in people. I didn't suffer from motion sickness, but I could definitely feel that big ship rocking during the night. Sometimes I'd be in the theater or the dining room and would suddenly feel lightheaded, and would realize the ship was moving. Very strange sensation.

Yep. But he was the ship's doctor and lived quite a different life than let's say...the waitstaff.
He talks about doing it again when the kids are grown. Something along the lines of "I'll be the doc and you can write."
Um...no. Thanks. :)

Welcome back!!
Hi, Karen,
As much as vacations can be fun, there's nothing like getting back home afterwards! And I agree--I'd enjoy a brief vacation by myself (with a big stack of books from my TBR) but then I don't know if it'd be much fun without DH and the kids. I haven't tried a cruise yet, but they seem like they could be fun... I'll be checking out your travel blog :)

Hey, Fedora! I think a weekend withouth the husband and kids is about my limit. As much as I might grumble and complain, I really am fond of them, LOL!
I've never done a cruise...
...but someday, I'd like to try it. My grandpa just got back from his first. He has done nothing but rave about it!!
I love to travel with or without DH, but no matter how little time I'm away, it is always nice to come home! I do enjoy when he has a weekend trip...the time to myself is nice. But I love it when he comes home again!

We rented a house along the coast of Northern California. This way we can do as much or as little as we want. We are planning on a little reading, a little shopping, a little wine tasting in Napa and visiting friends (we both used to live in CA). Some of my neighbors thought we would be better off going to Vegas or New York, but I gotta tell you I am looking forward to a little quiet time!!!

It sounds perfect! My husband and I both agreed that the next time we head South, we'd like to rent a little house or cottage on the Gulf coast and just stay there...no more running around! We've always stayed with my parents and though they treat us well, we can't help but feel that we really upset their routine.

Cruises....
Hi, Karen! Welcome home!
I've been on a couple of cruises, and the one I enjoyed the most was on an older, half-full ship populated by people with an average age of about 65. It was quiet, calm, easy to find a deck chair, and so, so relaxing. Easy to get in at the spa, etc. Mark and I danced for 90 minutes, all alone in one of the bars, to live music and the band asked us to request every song. I loved that cruise.
I like vacations away from Mark and my son, and a couple of times a year I go to NYC to stay with my sister, or on a sisters vacation. But...that's never more than a long weekend. In all honesty, I could quite easily take a week or so away from hub and son, but not with anyone else, if that makes any sense. I get stressed out by my extended family, LOL.
You know...I might enjoy a
You know...I might enjoy a cruise with older people, too, now that I think about it! It just seems like there'd be less stress, and I found on this last cruise that the older people were unfailingly courteous. Plus, I can run faster than them and score a lounge chair on the deck, LOL!

I think a vacation away from hubby and kids would be good for any one. I not talking about staying away for long just a few days. Maybe with a sister or friend would be good.

Yes, it definitely made the heart grow fonder! I really loved being with my sister for a week. We're Irish twins, less than 11 months apart, and were close growing up. We used to live just a few miles from one another but since she moved to Florida seven years ago, we rarely see each other so this was great for both of us.

Hi Karen,
Your trip sounds lovely, even with the homesickness. I was one that hated to be away from my family for more than a few nights--three was about perfect. Now I think I could do a week alone, but I do think about my family a lot. And....I think the beverage guy should have given you the pot :)Jeannie
Hi Jeannie! Yes, I agree
Hi Jeannie! Yes, I agree with you that three to four nights is just about perfect. And yes, that man should have given me the pot! Oh well...I guess he was having a bad morning.
