Time Travel!

Karen Foley's picture

Tomorrow is my birthday, so I thought it would be fun to take a short trip back to the year that I was born. It was both a great year and a tragic year, and according to my parents, New England suffered one of the most brutal heat waves in history during the week I was born. Maybe that's why I like to write hot stuff!

I share my birthday with the following well-know personalities:

• Juliette Lewis
• Jane Russell

The most popular toys of 1963:
• The "Sting-Ray" bicycle was first introduced
• Mouse-Trap
• Easy-Bake Oven
• The Jetsons Fun-Pad
• Air-Blaster Gun

The economy in 1963:
• The cost of a house - $19,300
• The cost of a gallon of regular gas - $0.30
• The cost of a gallon of milk - $0.49
• The cost of a dozen eggs - $0.55

We've made a lot of strides in the past 45 years, and personally I can't wait to see what the next 45 years will bring! So...what cool things happened in your birth year??

Happy Birthday!

You beat me to it -- I've been dying to say something since yesterday, with you and Jeannie so close together!

I was born in the same year as you, just a few months earlier, so all those things apply for me more or less, too -- cool. :)

So how are you planning to spend your weekend?

Sam

Thanks, Sam!

Well...I'm guessing DH and the girls will cook breakfast, and if the weather is nice we'll eat on the patio (my favorite spot). Then mom and I are heading into Newburyport to the Fragrance Bar to have custom fragrances created for each of us. We'll head down to the water for a lobster roll on the deck of Michael's Harborside, before I head home. I'd like to see the new Indie Jones movie, so that might be something for the evening.

Sounds fun!

I would probably be allergic to all of them, but the idea is nice. :)

Also, Yastrzemski was playing for the Red Sox in '63, though there wasn't anything notable about them otherwise that year, except that they are the Red Sox. ;)

Sam

1963 Club

Early Happy Birthday, Karen! Sounds like you have a great day planned for tomorrow. I'm in the 1963 Club, too. I was born in September.

LindaC

Linda, it was a great year!

Linda, it was a great year! I'm always surprised when people tell me they were born in 1963, because to me, they always look much younger!

Happy birthday!!

Hope you and your family have a terrific time celebrating! How neat, to be able to design your own fragrance!

Hmm... I think I was born the year that Armstrong set foot on the moon and Woodstock changed the world ;)

Man in the Moon

Fedora, I have a distinct memory of that night (the moon landing, not Woodstock, LOL). It was a hot summer evening, and we were at our summer cottage in New Hampshire. Somebody had dragged a television with rabbit ears outside, and everyone from the other cottages were sitting around, watching it and drinking beer, while the kids ran around with sparklers and tried to "see" the spacecraft land on the moon! It was a big party. I was six, but even to me, it seemed surreal.

Happy Birthday!

Me and my Mom are both allergic to most perfumes, lol, so we miss out on a lot of those kinds of things. Sounds like a great day planned. Have a ton of fun!

But since you asked what happened in our years...

* The TV miniseries Roots draws an audience of 130 million.
* Star Wars hits theaters--for the first time--and will go on to be the second highest-grossing film of all time.
* Saturday Night Fever sparks the disco inferno and the popularity of movie soundtracks.
* Elvis Presley dies at Graceland, his Memphis, Tenn. home. He was 42.
* The neutron bomb is developed. (Yet, we didn't get the Neutron Dance for several more years.)

Oh and the population had gone up to 220,239,425. Some serious bunny action happened between our births, lol.

Dee

Oh, wow!! I remember when

Oh, wow!! I remember when Roots was on television and my parents were hooked, but we weren't allowed to stay up that late, and it was considered too "adult" for us. I remember my dad crying the day Elvis died, and being absolutely mesmerized by Star Wars at the theater...we'd never seen anything like it before!

Well, I'm a bit older

First off, HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!

I always tell my kids three momentous things happened the year I was born:

1) Disneyland opened
2) The first McDonalds opened
3) I was born!

Any idea what year it was? The bad thing about being born the same year Disneyland opened is it is easy for my kids to remember how old I am (its announced in all the ads). So I can't try to shave a year or two off because they always point out the truth! :-D

ani

Thank you, Ani!! Wow, two of

Thank you, Ani!!

Wow, two of my favorite things, both as a kid and now; Disney and McDonalds!! You're right -- it was a great year (and I'm not saying which year that was, but you're not that much older than I am, LOL!). I remember going to McDonalds when I was really little, and it was a drive-up window, and hamburgers were like 29 cents.

McDonalds Slogan

Do you remember when they used to advertise that you could get a burger, fries and soda and still get change back from a dollar?

And that was when I was a teen!

Wow.

I don't remember that, but I'll bet my dad does!! We used to go to McDonalds for supper on Saturday night, all five of us, for less than $5, so that sounds right! But I also remember he made us kids share a drink, which we didn't like.

Happy Birthday! J.K.

I think that the most

I think that the most momentous event to happen on the DAY of my birth (but not the year) was the dropping of the bomb on Hiroshima.
Now I'm interested in looking up some of the events from the YEAR of my birth!

Ooooh, wow! That is pretty

Ooooh, wow! That is pretty momentous! BTW...fabulous cover for My Immortal!! And thank you for the birthday wish!!

Happy Birthday, Karen!!

I was born a few years later....but it was also during a brutal heat wave. My mom had only winter maternity clothes and didn't want to purchase summer stuff for just a week or so. The apt had no air conditioning. She was miserable!! She says that's why I hate hot weather to this day. :-)

He he - maybe I should look into writing hot, steamy stuff! I can say - it was predestined by my birth. He he! (It has been hot here the past week - I think I'm getting slap happy!) ;-)

Oh, hugs on the heat wave

Oh, hugs on the heat wave where you are...I don't mind hot writing, but I hate hot weather. It makes me verrry cranky!

1. Franklin Roosevelt died

1. Franklin Roosevelt died at Warm Springs Georgia on my
birthday. Same year and date.
2. Two days before- Allied forces liberated the Nazi
concentration camp - Buchenwald
3. Hitler committed suicide on the last day of the month.
4. Carousel, a musical play, opened on Broadway.
5. In June, the UN charter was signed and the official
founding was in October
6. In May, Nazi Germany surrendered
7. In November, first issue of Ebony was published

Wow!

Wow, wow, Ellen...what an amazing time period that was, and I'm not saying that like I think it was good; just so momentous and filled with world-changing events that will (hopefully) never be forgotten.

Happy birthday,

Thank you, Estella!! Casablanca is my husband's absolute favorite movie! And I wonder if that student at Harvard ever envisioned what his invention would become...it gives me shivers.

Happy Birthday

Happy Birthday, Karen. I wish you health and happiness.

HAPPY B-DAY KAREN

Hope it was a great day, and hope to see you at the meeting tomorrow. I was born in 1966, a year not quite as eventful as your year!

Marie

Thanks, Marie!

I really wanted to go to the meeting, but we have some family in from California with their new baby, and we're doing a big party for them. Waaaa...looking forward to Nationals, though!!

Karen--Happy Belated

Karen--Happy Belated Birthday!!! I've been out and about and didn't have internet. We are very close birthday-wise. :) I'm a wee bit older than you, because I remember 1963, lol. I was born in the best year for Chevies.

Happy Birthday,
Jeannie

Thank you, Jeannie!!

LOL, are you sure you remember 1963?? Because I would have sworn you were younger than me!! You look like you're still 30-something!
