Welcome Guest Blogger Kathryn Smith!
Vampires. You either love 'em or hate 'em. I happen to love 'em, especially when I get to make them exactly the kind of heroes/heroines I want them to be. The vampires I created in my Brotherhood of the Blood series are a mix of old school vamps and my own ideas of what being a vampire is all about. I've had a thing for blood suckers ever since I first saw Frank Langella play Dracula. I think I was 7. I remember sitting in our dark living room, just inches away from the T.V., fingers crossed that Dracula would get the girl and sail off into the sunset. Imagine my chagrin when things did not go my way! lol. Still, not everyone shares my love of bloodsuckers. So, I've compiled a list of pros and cons to get the conversation started.
Why Vampires make the best boyfriends:
1. He won't raid your fridge every time he's over.
2. He won't ever leave the toilet seat up.
3. He has the experience of age and the stamina of youth.
4. No matter how bloated you are, he will always be able to sweep you into his arms.
5. He won't bug you at work during the day.
6. He'll never expect you to cook for him.
7. He can protect you.
8. Chances are he'll have cool friends you can hook up with your single friends.
9. He really can give you 'forever'.
10.He'll always think you're young.
Why Vampires DON'T make the best boyfriends:
1. They don't understand why you're tired at night -- and whine about it.
2. You constantly need to keep your iron levels up.
3. When you say 'bite me' he'll take it as an invitation.
4. He has cold feet -- literally.
5. He looks at your friends like an all you can eat buffet.
6. He has more enemies than a third world dictator.
7. Vampire politics are always convoluted, and you don't get a vote.
8. Your mother wants you to have a church wedding.
9. He's lived through more fashion trends than Dick Clark and it shows.
10. Let's face it. He SUCKS.
Anyone have any pros or cons of their own to add?
And for those of you who think vampires make the best lovers, Let the Night Begin hits shelves tomorrow!

Welcome Kathryn!
Very funny blog -- love #5 on the "don't" list, LOL.
The book looks great -- very sexy cover -- I'm always up for Vampire romance...and I also remember Frank, though the Buffy group are more recent in my mind...
How about on the "don'ts": You have to be very careful about inviting his friends over for dinner (especially if you are having steak...get it, stake?) LOL I crack myself up...
Anyway, okay, just wanted to pop in with a welcome -- let the games begin...
Sam
Thanks, Sam! You've got me
Thanks, Sam! You've got me chuckling here as well. Certainly the Buffyverse stands out for some of the most recent offerings. Near Dark is another great vamp movie that I loved in my earlier years.
I can only think of one more con
No more beach vacations.
But I love vamps (hello! Vampslut here!). I actually went through a period of about 6 months where I read no vamp books.
But between the Stephenie Meyers and the Black Dagger Brotherhood books, not to mention just some other fun para books, I'm all vamped up again!
Welcome!
ani
PS I just finished Weddings from Hell this week. I loved Payen and Violet! What a fun couple. And sexy, too!
Hey Ani! Glad you enjoyed
Hey Ani! Glad you enjoyed Payen and Violet. They show up again in the last book of the series.
And vamps could still go to the beach -- just at night. lol. Kinda defeats the purpose of sun bathing, but imagine the skinny dips...
Hi Kathryn!
I have to say I'm in the "pro vampire" camp too. Well, in fiction. I think if I met up with a vampire in real life [were that possible] I would *not* be a happy girl. In fact, I think my reaction would be worthy of being put into a novel.
Pros- does he have "super powers"? It seems a lot of vampires have that - and, that'd be really nice, especially if he could take you around. Glamors, teleportation - hello no lines, and no travel fees?
The no sun is a big negative. And food. I so love food and eating out - but then I guess that's more for me - and keeps the cost down. Wow, did I just turn a con into a pro? ;). But, kids - are they possible? And what will they be? [That would be a con...]
Well, if you became a
Well, if you became a vampire, you'd never have to worry about diets, would you? lol. I think that's why I make my vamps eat real food -- I can't imagine never having bread again!
Hm
Good point, Kathryn - I was thinking I would remain human. I love the sun and sunlight and bright things and the outdoors. I think staying out of sunlight would be a big deal breaker for me. Still... have a paranormal metabolism/not worrying about weight... I like that :D
Hi
Hi Kathryn,
I'm a big fan of your historicals. I haven't read any of your vampire books yet but I will. Will be go back to historicals any time soon?
Well Jane, I hope you enjoy
Well Jane, I hope you enjoy the vamps! And you'll be happy to know that as of Fall 09, I will officially be writing straight historicals again. I'm staying with the Victorian period, but I have a brand new series that revolves around a Covent Garden club in the works. I'm very excited about it!
Welcome, Kathryn!
I don't need to tell you what a huge fan I am of your books, and your latest cover is gorgeous!! I was really into the television series, Moonlight, until the writers strike sort of threw it off course. But I remember Mick could smell the heroine when she was trying to hide from him. That was sort of cool. My daughter says a pro is that vampires always have great hair, LOL.
I am curious, though. How did you come up with the names for your vampires? Did you have a brainstorming session with somebody, or did you come up with the concept of choosing those names yourself? They're very cool! For anyone who hasn't had the pleasure of reading Kathryn's Brotherhood of the Blood series, you need to do so! Hot, hot, hot, with amazing heroines you'll fall in love with, and heroes to die for (literally!).
It's so great to have you here with us today, Kathryn!
Awww, thanks Karen! I loved
Awww, thanks Karen! I loved Moonlight too. I liked the fact that Mick wasn't all broody. lol. Actually, I came up with the names (Chapel, Bishop, Saint, Reign and Temple -- for those not familiar with the series) because the boys were taken in by the church and I thought the church at that time would probably try to force penance upon them. So, just as they were marked with crosses, they were given 'church' names.
Thanks for having me! I would have been here sooner but for some reason I couldn't get in earlier. Lucky for me, it's working now!
Very funny post. I am a pro

Hee!
Terrific post, Kathryn! I'm cautiously pro-vamp :) I remember seeing a stage production of Dracula in junior high and couldn't sleep for weeks! (Plus I kept imagining that somehow a bat/vampire was going to sneak into our bedroom and I'd be doooomed...)
Hi Kathryn!
Too funny! I laughed all the way through your lists.
Vamps
If you get a really good vamp read, it can be very sensual. I liked Vivi Anna's first book-Dark Lies.
I was a fan of Langella's Dracula, too, Kathryn.

Ladies, I'm so glad to find
Ladies, I'm so glad to find more of you who love vamps, especially dear Frank. lol. My sister can't read these books because she has a thing about vampires and her neck, so I can totally see someone worrying about stray bats coming into their room! :-)
Will check out the Vivi Anna -- thanks!
