Welcome Guest Blogger Molly O'Keefe!

MollyOKeefe's picture

Hello. My name is Molly O'Keefe and I am an addict.

I think it started, or perhaps became noticeable to others, in sixth grade with an oral book report on The Witch of Blackbird Pond. My teacher's comments were "Molly spent most of her ten minutes talking about the romance in the book. Instead of the witch hunt."

From there it just got worse.

One weekend when I was in junior high and my brother and dad were out of town, my mother rented An Officer and a Gentlemen (oh! Richard Gere) Gone With The Wind and Dirty Dancing. We watched them all in one night and nearly overdosed on romance and caramel corn. And then I found the books, the cupboard of books in Mrs. Meyer's house. All those Man of the Month Desires, the Elizabeth Lowells, the bare naked male chests. I was a goner. I still am a goner.

From there I graduated to Judith McNaught and Fabio covers, finding Laura Kinsale, Susan Elizabeth Phillips and Betina Krahn along the way. Richard Gere made Pretty Woman and I fell in lust in a big bad way. And now here I am - thirty two years old - and still trying to figure out ways I can stay in bed and read all day, or flop out on my couch and watch Brad Pitt make the sweet love in Thelma and Louise. I've called in sick to work (so I could finish a Deborah Smith book) I've sent my son to the in-laws (damn you JR Ward) I've pretended to be sick all so I can get my fix.

My name is Molly and I am addicted to Romance.

Like most women in the world, I am married to a nice guy. He looks great in blue jeans, (although not quite as good as the guy on the cover of Flyboy over at the sidebar -- good gravy is that guy real?) is a wonderful father and remembers flowers on our anniversary (we live next to a florist so it's practically cheating). 15119933.jpg
But in terms of romance - romance novel romance - he hasn't sacrificed himself to the bad guys to save my life. He hasn't given up his Dukedom or magic powers or long held commitment issues for me. He has never once said "you complete me," a la Jerry Maguire. He does do laundry. And he's pretty good with his hands....if you know what I mean. But I digress.

The truth is - most men don't give up their kingdoms - they give up crappy one bedroom apartments and Bud Light neon bar signs - and only because we make them. And that's why we need romance novels.

My Mom and I watched Open Range. Not a great movie, but I'm a sucker for Kevin Costner and the romance between him and Annette Benning's character is so sweet. So tender and awkward and well done that I felt it all. I felt all their hesitancy and passion and doubt and I loved it. It made me feel good about being a woman and a wife. It made me feel tingly and giddy. I turned to my mom and said - I'm so glad I write romance novels. I am so glad I can provide a little of that giddy, tingly happiness that comes from reading or watching people fall in love.

There isn't anything better, is there?

And sure, the happily ever after is nice. So are the sex scenes. But what I'm really wired to are those moments in books and movies when I think -- oh no, it's not going to work out. Richard Gere this time around won't get his head out of the sand and go after the prostitute with the heart of gold. Or, the heroine's not going to get over her heartbreaking history with men and he's not going to give up his solitary life. That moment in a romance when the mountain seems to great. That's the moment I love. I love to read it and I am really learning how to love writing it. My December book Baby Makes Three. is the first in a series about men facing some pretty big mountains and I've had a blast writing it.

I want readers to get that stomach twisting feeling that makes the Happily Ever After so sweet and so so addictive.

I'm so glad to be here smoking cigars with you ladies -- please tell me -- what do you love about reading romance novels? And what are the lengths you've gone to to get your fix. I will be sending a lovely goody bag to a lucky registered user who comments on the blog - so speak up!

Molly's Blog

Welcome Molly!

What a great blog! No worries, you are among addicts. ;) Obviously, many of us found a way to feed our addiction by making it our job. ;>

The thing that always gets me, more than anything else, is that this hero and heroine, these two specific people, are the ones who really can complete the other person, and by that I mean that we all have growing and filling out to do in life, we all have issues, pain, goals, needs, etc and what I love in romance is how the hero and heroine have to solve their own problems, to grow and change, in order to find that HEA. Because let's face it -- for an HEA you really need two people in a healthy relationship, and so part of romance is watching these folks work their way out of unhealthy mindsets, situations, etc and emerge into the sun... It's hopeful and inspiring, since you walk away believing that there is almost no situation in life from which one cannot be redeemed through love -- even a soul-sucking vampire can be loved and therefore redeemed.

Of course, like we've said many times before, romance and dysfunction in real life are often a bad mix, but still, everyone has their baggage and their issues to various degrees, and I know from experience that a healthy, loving relationship can make you grow and accomplish things you never would have on your own, and so that's what HEAs are about to me.

Sam

Amen Sam!!

I think that's the power of romance exactly -- it really makes you believe that love redeems and changes a person. Women in general do a lot of giving of themselves and thier time and resources and I think romance novels and movies give us a chance to feel like it does matter. And can, frankly, change the world maybe. Soul sucking vampires need love too.

Molly, I love what you've

Molly, I love what you've written. It brought back some memories of some older books and movies that I've loved. I've done some pretty wild things as well just to finish my book. Nothing worse then hubby saying turn out the light and you still have 5 chapters left! I think the worst though is smuggling my book to work and taking 30 bathroom breaks, because I HAD to know what was going to happen next. A thousand cheers for my kids who've had take-out soo many times because Mom isn't cooking tonight, she has to finish her story. For me, I guess the best part is when they wrestle with their emotions that they surely didn't love them, did they? Its wonderful how so many authors write those parts in different ways.

The things I've done....

Donkeycheese -- perhaps you can explain that nickname????

Last year I finished A Time Traveller's Wife in my bathroom at 3 am because husband was getting a little PO'd. I too love the self-doubt -- do I really deserve this? Am I loveable -- oh - when those scenes are done well they are heartbreakers FOR SURE.

Molly!

A-H-H, Molly, you are not alone in your addiction...I have been known to leave early for work (in your home town) and time the trains so I would get caught and have extra time to read. And here I am, a few years later still keeping at least one book in my purse all the time (hey, you never know when you might get stuck in traffic!)
I also have been known to "forget" to sleep until the book is finished. I can never finish a book and not start another...I can NOT be between books!

I had open heart surgery and it was actually asked if I needed the surgery or just wanted down time to read!!! Go figure, my family knows me!

I remember Molly, from her high school days and have loaned her bags of books....she has truly been addicted for years, she would pick out a bag of my books and start reading, I don't even think she knew when she left my house!

Long live romance authors!!!

Sharon

WOW!!!

Sharon! Thanks for coming by and of course thanks for being one of my early pushers...you had a great library! Heart surgery????

What I love about reading

What I love about reading romance novels is that no matter what happens to the stars of the book they do solve their problems and get together at the end. I will stay up all night reading and forgo sleep to finish a book. Before i retired I had a harder time finding excuses to read. I had to be at school, I had to grade papers, I had to make lesson plans, I had to make up tests and I couldn't exist on no sleep. But now all I have to do is eat and I can read while doing that. I take a pile of books with me on vacation and read at night.

reading vacations...

Vacations have become all about reading for me! It's unbelievable - I used to be a vacationer that wanted to do something all the time --- now just get me a comfortable chair and about 20 books...maybe I'm getting older. Best vacation this year -- a friend loaned me all the Tara Janzen Crazy books and I went to Florida...oh was that a vacation....

Hi, Molly!

You have summed up romance addiction so well! What I love about reading romance is that it gives you hope. When things look bleak, keep the faith. Believe in that happy ending. And I'm like you--the bigger the mountain, the more I have to keep reading. Fortunately, I'm in a job where I can put the book on my lap and read secretly with my big old desk blocking the view. More than once I've dropped the book on my feet and looked up with an innocent expression when someone has approached to talk to me.

Jeannie

Jeannie!

So good to see another Superauthor here! Thanks for coming by! That's some job you've got - reading under your desk. Was it George on Seinfeld that was able to sleep under his desk. Sadly, I've never been able to read at work, but I've missed more than my share of subway stops thanks to a book.

PS -- love the cover for your next book - was that the one that you were mentioning was hotter than you'd expected??? I will have to pick that one up...Molly O'Keefe

Hi Molly

for are romance novels the best way to relax and to escape to another world. I always have a book with me and I use every possible moment to read. No matter if it is between classes, during a train, in the waiting room at the doc's office and especially at night. Sometimes I can't stop reading no matter how late it is. LOL. I guess that qualifies me as a total bookaholic. *grins*

The first step is admitting it...

Thanks Danny for your post - those are the best books that keep you up when you know you should be going to bed... there is something wrong with us isn't there???

People who don't read

I have never understood people who don't read. I feel so bad for them that they missed out on the huge joy reading can bring a person.

Agreed

I am happy I married into a family of readers -- Mike likes to read, and his mother and I have that in common as well, sometimes sharing books, though she likes fantasy more, and I'm a romance reader, though we do crossover in paranormal. My family reads all of my books, and are readers, too, though not all of them and not as voracious as me and Mike's fam... I was actually kind of the odd duck out growing up. My mother read (in fact I found a couple of really old Silouettes in her bedstand a few months ago, LOL), and she loved True Story, and all that, so she loved romance and danger, too. I used to watch a lot with her when I was kid -- thanks for triggering that little memory. :)

Sam

Family reading....

We went to Montana when I was young - my whole family went backpacking and my mom would read Louis Lamour books in the tent at night by flashlight. I loved it - falling asleep to her voice in a tent with my whole family. Nothing better.

My husband is a reader - though oddly he's on a cross word puzzle kick right now. And we're really hoping to instill reading in our son. It is such a joy.

Me, too

A lot of my friends can't understand that I am such a bookworm, fortunately I come from a family of bookworms

Count me in...

...as one of those who've sacrificed sleep to finish a romance novel!! I do love the happy endings and the steamy scenes, but I also love the interplay between two people. I love the emotions that are involved, and I love it when authors make me feel those emotions right along with the characters!

The emotion is the thing...

I'm with you Cathy - the more emotional the better the ride for me, anyway. Who are your emotional favorites? I'd have to go Anne Stuart, Judith McNaught's historicals - they get me everytime...

Hello, my name is Chelle.

And I'm also a romance junkie. I've been an addict for 26 years, 6 months and 2 days. It's easy to spot an addict by the overflowing bookshelves lining the walls and plastic bags laying around...full. I love the flawed characters, the ones I can relate to the most.

I think the reason I love the movie 'Steel Magnolias' so much is the emotional roller coaster that made me laugh and cry within a 5 minute span. The funeral scene gets me everytime. That's what I want to do when I grow up...

I've seen a synopsis for the book, which began as a screen play, and it's the perfect formula for what I love in a story. It's not quite the HEA we all crave...but the storyline revolves around the underlying friendships among the electic group of southern women. That's my stomach twister.

Laughter through tears is my favorite emotion....

Oh Chelle -- it's a classic for a reason and I think that line sums up the way I feel about romances too! Twenty six years is a long time to have the romance monkey -- I'd love to see YOUR bookshelf!! I just bought a new one for my romances -- it's up beside my bed and I have a new lamp and duvet -- is it any wonder I can't get out of bed?

Molly, what a fabulous

Molly, what a fabulous post!! Is there any chance we're twins, separated at birth?? I've done all those things that you say you've done, but my mother has, sadly, never read a romance (until mine), and we've never overdosed on romantic movies together. I'm a sucker for that first kiss, and all the tension leading up to it, and how it irrevocably changes their relationship. I love your cover, BTW!

First kiss tension...

Hi Karen - I'd love to be your seperated at birth twin. Have you seen the movie Dear Frankie? It's a scottish film with Gerard Butler in it? THE BEST TENSION AROUND A FIRST KISS --- I'm not kidding that movie and that scene SLAYED ME. If you haven't seen it, I urge you (in all caps apparently) to go rent it tonight. You will not be sorry.

Gerard!!!

Molly, I'm way ahead of you on that one!! I've been a strong member of GALS (Gerry Addicted Lust Syndrome) and TARTS since I first saw his movie, Dear Frankie....yeah, that kiss scene just about did me in, too. Of all his movies, that's my hands-down favorite (and yes, I've watched them all...).

Dear Frankie

HA!!! Any time spent lusting over Gerard is time well-spent. Husband and I went to see 300 - and about halfway through it he said "i'm not supposed to be this attracted to the guy, am I?"

But Dear Frankie is such a gem - and such good storytelling. I think about that movie all the time.

I love reading romance too! These books take me away to different places I would normally not be able to go. I enjoy all the genres ranging from suspense to the paranormal. I just can never get enough of romance.

Paranormals

Great entertainment

I like romance novels because they provide great entertainment. The emotions in romance deal with sadness, heartache and happiness. You get a lot for your money. I also like the fairy tale aspect of some of these novels. Most of the time I like to pre-order books so that they arrive on the day it is released. I once went out in the freezing cold just so I could pick up a book by Julie Garwood.

Great entertainment -- at a cost!!

Hi Jane! I do think you get so much for your money with romance. I've gone on ebay and spent a stupid amount of money for an old Rebecca Paisley novel. gotta feed the monkey on my back....

I think everyone likes romance for their hapy endings... I also like them because they make us forget for a few hours that life is difficult and troublesome. So, I guess they are great for relaxing!

Totally true

Yesterday, we had a huge snow storm and I was stuck in the bus for more than 2 hours... when the ride usually takes 20 minutes. I searched in my bag and saw I had forgotten my novel!! What a disaster :)

Disaster!!!

Lily -- that is one of the worst things I've ever heard. Two hours!!! And no book. Let that be a lesson to all of us -- never be stuck without a fix.

Yep...

Exactly what I did today... I kept one book with me and even put a spare - romance books are so compact - we never know what can happen when we leave home!! However, today the ride took 40 minutes, much better than the 2 hours :)

Addict

I am also an addict... though I have easy access to books, I need to read at least one historical and one category romance per week... even if I have deadlines, studies, exams, you name it - I am a med student, so I have a lot of the above!!

Once, I had a major exam - when I say major, it was a final where I needed to have a top score to ensure a good ranking to get myself an interview. I just forgot that my future was depending on that score - OK this is a bit of an exaggeration, I had 2 other great scores, but that one was also crucial - it was biology - and read a great Woodiwiss book! However, I panicked a bit at 12AM... I had to finish my book quickly - I need to sleep well before an exam. Thankfully, I finished the book... whick I loved and got through my exam and got myslelf a 98%. Romance readers are very smart people :)

However, now I try to read a few days before an exam and not the day before! You can't trust luck!

Ringing endorsement!

Natalie - I am sure all your future patients thank you for your new reading rule!! Congrats on your success! And in making time for reading when it sounds like you have so little free time. But I imagine with the stress you are under - romance is the perfect escape!

Very funny :)

I know... I am sure they would not want me to read before my exams :) However, I also know my priorities... even if my mom wants me to study more!

I am doing my clerkships now, so I have a bit more spare time, which means I can read a little more, because I have less evaluations and exams. Reading is very relaxing, however, to try and finish a book can be very stressful, which sometimes means I read very quickly and don't enjoy the book as much as I should! That also means I am reading more Harlequins, they are shorter than historicals:)

PS: Thanks for the encouragement!

Reading too fast

Ha! Nathalie -- I totally agree with you. Why do we rush these books? They'll be there in the morning??? IT's like I've invested this much time, it's three am, I am wired from the book so I just rush through it. But I always reread a few months later and take my time. So, it's like reading a slightly different book.

Hello, My name is Jennifer

Hello, My name is Jennifer and I am addicted to romance, too! LOL

I love romance books and stories and have vivid memories of making up my own storylines with Barbie and Ken (complete with secondary characters). Once I discovered romance books, I read them whenever I could...even wanted to pick one for a book report in high school, but I don't think the teacher would have approved...but I did check out every adult and YA romance our school library had...including Heather Graham and Rexanne Becnel...you know, I am kind of surprised they had those books.

I used to read during class, lunch, P.E., etc. to get my fix. To prevent looks from teachers and other students I would put post-its on the more rique covers...LOL. On Friday nights and Saturday nights I could be found curled up with a romance book rather than out partying with friends...which made my folks happy. LOL

I still would much rather read a romance or watch a romantic movie than just about anything else.

Post its!!!

Oh my gosh - Jennifer -- innovative use of office supplies! Well done!!! So many of those covers were hard to carry around. I am a proud romance reader - but yikes. I have to say the more I look at Sam Hunters cover for Talking In Your Sleep - the more I love it. Festive and sexy -- no post it's needed!

Yup, Post its...

The covers didn't bother me, but apparently teachers aren't too thrilled to see shirtless guys on books their students are reading...although it might have made some of those required reading books a little more interesting if a shirtless guy was thrown in the mix...LOL...my classmates didn't understand my love of books yet alone romance...LOL...so post its were used quite a bit in high school.

Now I don't use post its at all...but I did shock my 4-year-old nephew who saw the cover of one of the books I was reading. I couldn't figure out what was wrong with him when he gasped. I thought he was hurt and then he pointed to the fully-clothed couple on the cover and whispered, "Look, they're kissing..." LOL
