Five by Five Contest

Samantha Hunter's picture

In the last few months, I did a couple things that started adding to the TBR. First, I bought a Dell Axim, which, while I can use it for a multitude of things, functions as an e-reader, so I immediately downloaded all kinds of books to that. Then, I started getting out of the house a few days a week to work or research at the local B&N, and hooked Mike into that as well, when we realized we could sit and have a coffee and read magazines rather than paying for them. Before the B&N people get all puffy about that, I should follow quickly by saying I also started trying to write in a new genre, mystery, which means every time I walk into B&N, I walk out with no fewer than 3-5 new books, and then dh usually buys some, too, so I don't feel too guilty about the free magazine reading. All this means my TBR has grown.

However, it's not unmanageable. I am reading steadily, and enjoying most of the books I come across. The last five books I read were

Fool Moon Jim Butcher
Fire Study, by Maria Snyder
D is for Deadbeat, Sue Grafton
Abby Cooper: Psychic Eye, Victoria Laurie
Poison Pen, a Forensic Handwriting Mystery, Sheila Lowe

The next five coming up are:

A Kiss to Remember, Kim VanMeter
Blood Lines, Tanya Huff
Grave Peril, Jim Butcher
A Sexy Time Of It Cara Summers
E is for Evidence Sue Grafton

In addition, I see there is a new Charlaine Harris to be had, and also a new Sarah Mayberry, which will be added to the stack. Recent reads which I loved but didn't make the list is the Succubus Series by Richelle Mead, which I have reviewed at Writers are Readers, and my reviews can be read here. I also love Lisa Scottoline, and had Daddy's Girl on e-book, but as I've found out, ebooks outside of Harlequin are often expensive as print books (Stupid) and also don't download reliably -- the Daddy's Girl download was corrupt, so I have to try to get it again, but I don't know if I'll be able to -- maybe this is the advantage to a Kindle?

So, for lack of anything more insightful to talk about early on a Monday morning, I thought I would just share my growing stack of reading, and maybe we could all talk books. If you've read any of my last five, did you like them? If you've read any of my next five, please don't give anything away! :) If you have any really good recommendations, or any e-book downloading tips, please share!

And if you are a registered user, and you can share your last five, and your next five, you will qualify for a drawing to win a $25 Barnes and Noble gift card on Friday, which will also help me not feel guilty about reading their magazines for free... ;>

Fun!

Well, I haven't read any of your last five or next five, Samantha, so I'm no help there :X.
The last five books I read were:
Wild, Wicked, & Wanton by Jaci Burton
A Hunger Like No Other by Kresley Cole
No Rest for the Wicked by Kresley Cole
Baddest Bad Boys by Shannon McKenna, EC Sheedy and Kate Noble
Real Men Do It Better by Carrie Alexander, Lora Leigh, Susan Donovan, and Lori Wilde

The next 5 books I'm going to read are:
Wicked Deeds on a Winter's Night by Kresley Cole
Dark Needs at Night's Edge by Kresley Cole
French Kissing by Nancy Warren
Seven Nights of Sin by Lacey Alexander
and hopefully Fallen by Erin McCarthy if/when I can get it.

:X But I can't do any reading as of yet. 2 finals in 24 hours, and the first one is in 6... I'm telling myself I'm de-stressing by playing online -although I'm supposed to be doing practice problems right now. Haha- so I'm the one who should be feeling guilty. :X

oops! School first!

Then a whole summer of reading later! ;)

I keep hearing about Kresley Cole, I think Dee likes her -- have to check that out...

Good luck on finals!

Sam

:D

Finals are over! I am now officially a 3L! I hope :P.
I've really liked the first two Kresley Cole books and I just got the next two so I'm looking forward to them :D. I also really enjoyed looking through everyone's 5s. So many great books!

Mmm, books...

I also haven't read any of those books, but I enjoy several of those authors.

My next five: Rogue by Rachel Vincent

BTW, Sam, not sure if I told you this before, but I really liked Joy and Rafe. If I did, it bears repeating. :)

Cari

Thanks Cari!

I never get tired of hearing people love my characters. :)

Angels Fall was a good book -- loved that -- actually, I don't read much Nora anymore, though I do read JD Robb, but I enjoyed Angels Fall a lot. It's a good, thick vacation book, too.

Sam

I am wayyyy too disorganized to have a next five!! LOL!!!

M

But what were the last five? ;>

Fun topic!

Wow--I'm sitting at school and cannot remember the titles of the books I've recently read. I think of them as Ellen's book, or Sam's book. Let's see (I'm awful at remembering titles):

Wanted Man by Ellen Hartman
Diaper Diaries by Abby Gaines
Undercover Protector by Molly O'Keefe
Sir Gawain and The Green Knight
Another Man's Baby by Kay Stockham (this is in progress)

My TBR pile is toppling and I can't remember any titles, lol. I'll get back to you...:)

Jeannie

I do that, too...

Right now, reading Kim's book -- isn't it fun, buying books that someone you know wrote? It gives a whole new level to reading...

However I am reading "When a Hero Comes Home" by Teresa Southwick at the moment.

I'm still in my mystery

I'm still in my mystery mode, primarily, but I have snuck a few romances in there. I love Kim's book too -- love books with landscaping, LOL. I know, I'm weird...

Sam

Yes I did enjoy this book. It was a real cute comedy. It was the first book I read of her also. I had never heard of her either.

Sam

Reading piles - gotta love 'em!

Hey there Sammas! I have been reading up a Regency romance storm lately. Have just discovered Loretta Chase and have been devouring her backlist:
Mr Impossible
Lord Perfect
Miss Wonderful
Not Quite a Lady

All terrific. And have also been "doing" a bit of Carl Hiassen - Lucky You and Skinny Dip being my most recent. I do love his voice. Very funny. I also read the latest Karen Kendall, Take Me If You Can, which I really enjoyed - fun, sexy, a new direction for Karen with adventures in the world of high art theft.

As for my next reads, I have more Loretta Chase on the way ( I do love a nice long backlist!) and I am looking forward to the soon-to-be-released Rachel Gibson book in May. Not sure of titles on any of these.

I do occasionally read mystery/crime. Tess Gerristen is my all time favourite these days, but I also really admire Minette Walters, an English writer, because each of her books is totally different and so interesting and compelling. PD James, another English writer, also does great detective fiction - very intense and psychological.

Right, back to manuscript for me. Big shout out to everyone - hope you're all well.

Hey you!

A Mayberry Sighting! (who is an RT Top Pick, by the way, folks, so keep an eye out for the new book, which I think Sarah will be talking about next month...) :)

Love Carl Hiassen -- hysterical, the environmental themes, love it. I go back and forth on Rachel G -- I have absolutely loved some of her books, but didn't make it halfway through the last one... Strange how that happens... See Jane Score and True Confessions were my very favorites... Have heard a lot about James, yes... and others JA Jance, and one other, Anne Perry? Some drift into suspense more... though Tess Gerritsen is one I keep meaning to try...

Sam

HI!!

Hi, Sarah (and Sam!) Posted below before scrolling up to read everyone else's comments! Glad to hear you're well, and I'm about to start in on Loretta Chase, too! And I haven't read Karen's yet, but loved her cover and premise--I keep thinking Pierce Brosnan...
Happy writing!

Sam

I haven't read any of the

I haven't read any of the books you have or any of the books up on deck for you.

3. Doctors Order by Jessica Andersen
4. Creation in Death by JD Robb
5. Flashpoint by Suzanne Brockmann

Next up

5. Caressed by Ice by Nalini Singh
(4 & 5 dependent on loving 2 :) )

I've read Grafton

I've read all the Sue Grafton books, but it's been a while. I think she had a new one around Christmas and I read it while at my inlaws' house.

I have just read:

1. After Glow by Jayne Castle
2. After Dark by Jayne Castle
3. Where Are You Now by Mary Higgins Clark
4. The Third Circle by Amanda Quick
5. It Happened One Autumn by Lisa Kleypas

Next up:

1. Scandal in Spring by Lisa Kleypas
2. The Hollow by Nora Roberts
3. The Naked Earl by Sally MacKenzie
4. The Naked Gentleman by Sally MacKenzie
5. Quicksand by Iris Johansen

#4 depending on how I like #3, and #5 depending if I can get into it quickly enough to finish before it's due back at the library. I've been distracted by the others and life in general. So if something else better comes along, #5 will change. I've read others in the Eve Duncan forensics series and they have been hit or miss for me, but I always request her books as soon as they are listed on the coming attractions page on the library web site. I used to do that with Patricia Cornwell, but the last few of hers I didn't even finish so I gave up.

Ann, yes

I loved the first two Singh books, though the third didn't do much for me -- I won't say why, don't want to bias you.

Still reading the In Death books, too -- though I don't think they are as great as the first 12 were, really... bigger things need to happen...

Sam

The first 12 ID...

Totally agree, Sam. I still love the series...but around book 13, for me, some of the magic disappeared.

Cari

Fun!

This was a really good idea, Sam! I've added lots of new titles to my "to buy" list! :)

My next five are:

1. The Darkest Night - Gena Showalter
2. Faking It - Jennifer Crusie
3. Kiss of Fire -Deborah Cooke
4. Have Mercy - Jo Leigh
5. Sex, Straight Up - Kathleen O'Reilly

I've started all of these books over the past couple of weeks and am not letting myself read anything else 'til I finish them. :)

Me, too

I don't think I realized how dangerous this thread would be to finding new books, LOL!

Sam

I'm sorry--I haven't read any of your lists of five, but at least I won't be offering any spoilers either! ;) And I don't have an e-book reader yet, so I've be limited to reading e-books on the computer, which I haven't really enjoyed all that much--it's OK, but I tend to prefer a physical book to the screen-reading experience. It might be different with a handheld reader, but I couldn't say...

5x5

I hope I'm not too late - things have been zany crazy wacko around here lately!
