Blog Switcheroo... Welcome Sharon Long!
My Paper Obsession
I love paper. Paper makes me happy. It doesn't hurt that my husband is a forester and he buys trees to make paper heh. Have to support our livelihood!
Many, many of my early books were written in notebooks. Notebooks also make me happy. I love buying notebooks with nice, shiny brand new paper. It wasn't until a couple of years ago that I trained myself to "be creative" in front of a computer. I'd write until my hand fell off and I'd transcribe it later onto the computer.
Eventually I managed to create from scratch on a computer, but there are still times when only paper will do.
Every single book I've written and published has pages in a notebook, somewhere, somehow. And it's not pretty. Clean. Not neat or legible for that matter. It's all one big long run on sentence. No punctuation, no indention, no paragraphs. It's extremely freeing to just write and let it all pour out.
When I get hostile with a current work, I've found shutting the computer and barricading myself with a notebook and my favorite orange pen does wonders for my disposition. And as much as I love my laptop, a notebook is still more portable. I have a thirty minute wait every day outside my daughter's school and I can usually get around 5 pages scribbled in my notebook in that time.
Apart from actual writing, I love lists. I make lists, throw them away, hardly ever adhere to them, but there is comfort in making a list. It organizes my very disorganized brain, even if for a few moments, and making a list can usually avert a major meltdown.
And I'm also a doodler. You should see the margins of my notebook pages. Completely filled with all sorts of meaningless doodles. What can I say? I'm in love with the written word. Written as in done by hand with pen or pencil.
Am I alone in my paper obsession? I also admit to a deep love for pens. *sigh* I love me some pens. And lists. And doodling.
I’m giving away a copy of my March Berkley Heat, Sweet Surrender. To enter just tell me about your paper/pen/doodle/list obsessions…or lack thereof. Remember you need to register as a user here at Cigars to enter. Winner will be randomly selected and posted tonight in the comments.

I'm a list maker all the way
I make lists for most of my days, not that they always get done. I have come to realize that I'm like a fish out of water without a list. My to do list keeps me from flopping around saying, "What did I want to do today?" Love notebooks. I have different ones for different things. One is a journal, another is my homemade beauty recipe book, and then there is my note book of ideas for that book I may someday write. As far a doodles I have my stetch books for that. I love to draw comic book characters, mainly women. I think paper in any form is great, if you don't write you ideas down when you get them you lose them. I myself have a little notebook in my purse.
I lose them...
lol I'm a 50/50 proposition on not getting ideas written down right away. Unfortunately for me, they tend to pop into my head in the wee hours of the morning. Sometimes I drag myself out of bed to take notes and other times I don't.
Hi Sharon!
And welcome to Cigars!! OMG, yes!! I completely understand your addiction to paper; I absolutely cannot go to a mall without stopping by a stationary store to check out their collection of pretty pens and writing tools. Neither can I go to Barnes & Noble without checking out their assortment of journals, diaries, etc. I have an entire drawer of my desk filled with these luscious, leather-bound beauties. At work I have several notebooks; one for my work-related meetings (other people have Franklin planners or their laptops; I have my trusty college-ruled, five-subject Mead notebook) and one for my writing. I have my favorite pens...the kind that seem to flow effortlessly across the page, making the writing pure joy.
Single subject
For some reason only the single subject, wide ruled notebooks will do for me. Which is why I have piles and piles of them because I run through them so fast.
I used to be a huge stationery buff and a frequent letter writer, but these days, if I can't email, I don't bother *g* I'm lazy...
Raising hand....
I am a paper addict, too. I have been one forever. I love the beginning of the school year because of all the stationary products that are available and on sale. I have a spiral notebook for each book I write, and sometimes I shut down the computer and tell my husband it's pencil time. I can't write a story longhand, though, because I can't write as fast as I think. I type much faster.
Great having you here, Sharon!
Jeannie
Office supplies!
I love Office Depot and they have a section at the front of the store with their clearance section and I hit it every single time I'm there. I love envelopes too *g* I stocked up when they clearanced out the bubble mailers.
Lists, notebooks, journal = JOY!
I adore journals and making lists. I have a red leather reusable journal, two Moleskines in my bag, and an Excel spreadsheet where I track monthly/daily goals and progress - pages written, things to do, etc. It's a little disorganized, but oh well...it's working!
Organization....
For someone who loves lists and notebooks as much as I do, one would think it would lead to a more organized mind, but nope. I'm not even organized about my notebooks and invariably I can never find the right notebook that has the scene I wrote which prompts a messy search through my cluttered office.
You don't punctuate?
Not for the contest--I'm a Cigars girl.
I've heard of that. I can't do it, but I've heard of it. Honestly, my handwriting is so bad, you can't find the punctuation anyway. I've gone back to notebooks of late, but if that picture is of your actual notebook, I'm going to have to show you one of mine. That one looks professionally typed, lol.
I'm a list person. I haven't been able to keep to a list in months, though. Sucks. I miss being productive. :)
Dee
Heh
I had to peel through the pages to find something that didn't have doodles covering the margins and something that was half way legible *g*
Me too
I *heart* paper and gel pens. I'm more of a looseleaf girl in my favorite Harley Davidson binder though. :) I tend to make a scene one big paragraph then put it 'right' when I type it into the computer. Nothing like writing on paper to get the muse going again sometimes!
Correcting
I make it all nice and shiny as I'm typing it in as well. It's too time consuming to have to stop and think about all that stuff as I'm writing :)
Like Lissy said...
Writing on paper is a great way to get the muse going again for me, too. Not sure why that is exactly, but my guess is it both takes me back to the good of days when writing was simply for fun and also because being away from the computer eliminates the temptation to "just check the email really quick". And I'm definitely a loose leaf kind of girl, too. :)
This was such a good idea to switch up like this! Kudos to whoever came up with it! :)
Hives
I think loose leaf paper would give me hives!
I love paper too.
I love paper too. I love going to office supply stores and looking around for unique stuff. I have note pads and pens/pencils laying around so I can write down ideas as they come to me and my desk looks like it is decorated in post-it notes. LOL
Post its
I've tried post its quite a few times. I always thought I'd like them and use them, but I never do. Not sure why. I think it's because I like all my scribblings in a confined space so I don't run the risk of losing any of it. I know if I've written something down that it's in one of my notebooks SOMEWHERE so all I have to do is thumb through them.
Hi Sharon!! Did you say
Hi Sharon!!
Did you say paper??
Yes I am obsessed with notebooks and paper and mechanical pencils! I drive my family crazy! I have notebooks everywhere and I am sure if I were to ever really clean the house up I would find long lost notebooks!! I passed my love of paper on to my dd who at 20 writes in her journal every single day and has since she was in Kindergarten. I have all of her first journals and treasure them!! I am actually getting ready to go to Target to pick up a few needed things and it will take all my strength to walk past the paper aisle and not touch or pick a notebook up! Wish me luck!!
Hi Blanche!
I don't even try to resist the urge *g* But I hear you on passing down my love of paper. My daughter LOVES notebooks. I have to buy her one when I get one otherwise she tries to confiscate mine ;)
Post-it Notes
I'm addicted to Post-it Notes. I have them in many sizes and colors. I remember when there was only one color available, yellow. Now you fuschia and purple. Love the Post-it dispenser too. There are Post-its all over my desk and computer and frig to remind me of the things I have to do.
twitching
I'm starting to twitch *g* I might need Benadryl. See I keep thinking, but what if something important I wrote down falls off wherever I stuck it. Or what if one of the kids grabs one?
Me too!!
I love using the long yellow pads and mechanical pencils. I have like...10 writing pads and a ton of pencils and pretty pens. But I'm lazy...I hate transferring what I've written to files on the laptop. Now I've started using the yellow pads for lists, notes and doodles.
lazy
I think I wrote the book on being lazy *g* But I've found that using my down times works great for transfering the notebook to the computer. It takes no creativity on my part to just mindlessly type already created passages into the computer, so for instance, in the mornings, when I'm completely and utterly braindead and have the creativity of a crab, I can do stuff that doesn't take much brain power *g*
I love paper!!!
I love paper too..but I am more of a brightly colored/patterned paper girl myself. I like to fold paper(origami). I do have notebooks in about every room...I learned that if I want to remember anything the best bet it to write it down somewhere before it is lost forever:)
Kendra
Scrappy!
*smooch* So glad you made it over :)
Oooh... paper is SO pretty!
Hi, Sharon!
I can understand your attachment to the written word and real writing (with a pen and paper)--I feel that way, too. Although I don't consider myself a writer, when I have to write (an assignment or the occasional review or something), I feel much more creative somehow with an actual pen in hand. A blank Word document just isn't the same thing!
And I love paper and stationery and pens and journals and all that good stuff--I could happily spend hours in an office supply store or better yet, a fancy paper place--we visited Kate's Paperie in NY once...oooh! And as an occasional designer, I also really love those little swatch books that paper companies send to printers--also very cool!
Anyway, I make lists sometimes, and love to check stuff off. I use them mainly when under pressure, so I can feel like I'm putting the info somewhere I can't too easily forget it! (Unless I lose the list, of course... ;))
oohhh
paper places *sigh* What better place could there be? And yes, under pressure is when I start making lists like mad. It's part of my clearing the brain clutter routine.
I make lists because my
I make lists because my memory isn't the best - don't know where I'd be without lists of the jobs I need to do that day :D However I don't use post-it notes I prefer memo squares :D
Hey Ilona :)
So glad you made it over. Hope things are well across the pond :)
I love to doodle
When I am on hold and if I have a paper and pen then I will doodle. It's not something I think about but I find myself doing it. When I have a lot to do I will make lists too. Sometimes I follow them and sometimes I don't but they help me organize my thoughts.
doodler
I'm very much an unconscious doodler too. I think doodling is the equivalent of checking email if I'm working on the laptop. It's that brain break.
paper please!
Hi Sharon,
I like writing things down as well. I used to put everything on paper first - creative writing, academic papers, etc. It wasn't until college, really, that I wrote papers straight on my computer. I think it had something to do with having only 8 hours before a 20 page paper was due. No time to hand write it, much less type it up with those constraints. Now I take notes on my laptop, but if I feel like jotting down creative blips, I like to do it by hand. I'm not much of a list maker, but I love handwriting by choice. (Madly hand writing answers to an exam for four hours by hand now is torture.)
Definitely a list girl
I have lists all over the house. Regular ones for groceries and drug store items, but I also have a binder full of ideas I get for my kids and hubby. With both my boys away at school, I am always sending them "just because" care packages. So I keep lists of their favorite foods and snacks, which brand of toiletries they like, and music and movies that I've heard them talk about. I just love surprising them! Then I keep a list of what I've actually sent, since, let's face it, without my lists I wouldn't remember a thing!
I love pens and notebooks
I love pens and notebooks and I always wrote things down before typing them up. If I saw a notebooks with a cute cover or a cover that fascinated me I'd buy it for later use and I was always trying out new types of pens. Since I taught school there was always a need for writing things down including tests, lesson plans, lectures etc. And making lists is the only way I can remember what needs doing or what I need to buy so I still use notebooks. In fact I use notebooks for writing down driving directions when I go on vacation because I don't always want to go in the way the internet tells me to. I have more notebooks and pens than I will ever use.
I love paper and Gel pens. I
I love paper and Gel pens. I have a notepad or steno book in almost every room of the house and I am not a writer.
I find I have to jot down things as I think of them or I forget them. Chores, book titles, author names, groceries, etc. My husband calls them my to do things.
List Maker Here
Now that I have two kids under the age of 5 the only way I remember anything is to write it down. I love cool notepads in a variety of shapes and sizes to use specifically for this.
Doodling
I am a doodler, when I set at the computer you will find little pictures that I have drawn, stick men mostley. I make grocery list and then forget to take them with me. You will find little notes all around my computer. So I guess you could call me a doodler.
Paperaholic?
I also love pens and paper. I keep paper of all sizes and kinds. Even when I make a mistake on one side, I use the other side of the paper. I guess I hate wasting paper too. :) I would doodle, jot down things I need to do, or make lists for that and this. Sometimes when I write it down on one piece of paper and if I lose it, I tend to write my list again. As for pens, I collect pens of all colors I get as freebies or buy from the store. But I do love the gel pens too as someone mentioned.
Paper and Pens and Supplies - Oh My!
The first thing I did when I got my allowance was replace any of my school supplies that were showing their wear and tear. I loved the start of a new school year - all those pens, folders and notebooks - all crisp and fresh. I so get the lure of a new notebook.
Each story I write gets its' own unique colored Composition notebook and all my notes are written in matching ink with a bold, Rollerball. I have to say, Maya - based on your picture, you keep a pretty neat notebook. Mine tends to have more arrows and tangents boxed off from the main plot points. Some of this is because of the way I process, but it's mostly because I love the way the ink flows on the paper and I can't doodle worth a darn.
I completely sympathize with the ladies who find it difficult to pass up the office supplies aisle. Oh, the possibilities they offer.
I've just gone back to paper a bit
I've always used notepads and those little blocks of 2000 3X3 squares by the phone for lists and messages, etc but I can't say I did anything for my writing on paper since I started -- I've always been sheerly laptop.
Now I have my Axim, and I can write on that, and do lists, calendar, notes, documents, etc -- had it with me as I did research at B&N today, and took pages of notes...
But then I started journaling as well, just for writing -- a notebook where I do writing exercises, thoughts, plans, questions, ideas, and such... and I did really well for a few weeks, and then I didn't touch it all last week as my attention starts to hone in on a new book, I start working more on the computer again -- I think because I can type much faster than I can write...
A friend did give me the cutest little hard-bound mini-notebook for my bag, though, and I keep that in there, and do use it for grocery lists, etc -- but not so much for writing...
I like paper, but I like my computers, too, and the problem is when you start having stuff all over the place... notes from the DVDs I'm watching in my notebook... notes from research on the Axim... other stuff on my computer... ugh.
I'm old now and get confused easily, you know! LOL
Sam
:)
Glad to see I'm not alone in my paper obsession. I spent a good part of the afternoon today with my nose in my notebook. Now I'm down to just a few pages left so I need to go stock up again!
paper fiend
I always start on loose leaf with my ideas before I type them into the computer. I can't write with a pen though. It has to be a pencil, preferably mechanical so that I don't have to stop to sharpen once I get going. I keep a separate steno notebook for journaling(I'm a lefty, so it helps to have the spirals at the top or non existant, hence the loose leaf).
Sharon, in regards to the a.m. transfer of your notes from paper to computer, how do you resist editing?
Editing
I do edit as I type it in. I'm not talking about heavy revisions or anything but I make it pretty and shiny and punctuate it, frown at word choices and do some changing around but no heavy rewriting. I always edit as I go. I can't bear the thought of getting to the end of a book and facing sweeping edits. It would be like having to write an entire book over which would make me want to slit my wrists.
I have a system of re-reading what I wrote the previous day before I start the current day's writing and I often edit and fix stuff before diving into the next writing stage. It brings me up to speed on where I am in the story and immerses my brain where it needs to be.
I used to have to do a lot of revising/rewriting in the editing stage, but I've trained myself and worked at writing tighter and leaner as I go and it sure has saved me time and mental anguish.
I like making list and I
I like making list and I love collecting ink pens from my fave authors.

Oh can't wait for the release Sharon!!!
Oh I love getting journals and too notebooks! I keep notebooks of wishlists, authors to look up, notes from chats, etc. I never get a plain looking notebook! Always can find those with designs on them in clearance in Target and Hallmark.
Now I want to go shop for some! LOL
plain or pretty
I don't care *g* I'll take either, though if I get a plain one, I have less of a risk of my daughter confiscating it. I bought a pink girly one before Christmas and got about three pages out of it. When I picked it up again, it was full of her stuff lol.
Sharon, my daughter is a
Sharon, my daughter is a huge bargain shopper! So with the prices she finds, I love being able to have them with different designs. Especially the ones she found with the cowboys on them, smile. Too tho, I agree, she takes over any goodies I have and they are lost to me. So I do better when she does the shopping :)
I make lists for all kinds
I make lists for all kinds of things. Don't draw or do things like just lists all the time.
i do list things and cross
i do list things and cross them out. i write my name , my favorite sports team over and over. Hi sharon to seeu ladies here.
I doodle when I'm on the
I doodle when I'm on the phone. I've always done it and probably always will. :) I also like to make list. As for pens my favorite is a Bic XXL I LOVE those things. They are SO nice to write with.
I am obsessed with paper too
Maybe it's because I'm an educator, but I can't get away from paper. My earliest college papers were on paper- huge legal pads. I did so much revising I thought my eyes would be permanently squinted! Then I switched to using a computer for writing and I seriously don't know what I did before then!
I use post its in the classroom and at home to keep organized. All hail to the sticky note goddess!! I love gel pens- use them all the time when I'm writing thank you notes or stuff to the kids in my classroom. Nice to see you guys over here!
