Surprise...It's an October baby

ShirleyJump's picture

I have a book coming out in a week (CHRISTMAS WEDDINGS, an anthology) and I had absolutely no idea I even had an October release until about two weeks ago. So, it was like, SURPRISE...You have a new baby, and she's arriving on the shelves any second so you might want to start promoting. Like, now.

Normally I'm on top of this kind of thing. At least enough that I have a newsletter written, the cover up on places like Cigars, gotten a blog tour going. Now I have uh...nothing in place. It's kind of like getting the baby and having no more than the diapers the hospital gives you for free.
That was how I felt when I had my second child. I was working full-time as a freelance writer, and had my first one in preschool. I was running everywhere, working right up to the last day, and never got the downtime I had with my first baby to make meals ahead of time, to really get the nursery laid out the way I wanted to. I kept thinking I'd find time, and I didn't. When I had my son, I remember laying in the hospital room, thinking, "I'm so not ready for this." But it was too late. I had the baby already ;-)

ChristmasWeddingsCover_0.jpgNow I have a book out and I'm so not ready for this. So how did this happen? Well, this book was originally released in the UK last year. I had asked my editor when it would be out in the US and they told me in two years. I dutifully put that on my spreadsheet where I keep track of all my releases (with six or more a year, I need a spreadsheet, LOL). Then forgot about it. After all, I had until 2009. Or so I thought.

Then author copies arrived two weeks ago. But they didn't have a date on them (because it was a Christmas anthology). My editor was out of town, so I couldn't ask about it. I figured, okay, maybe it's a December release, going on author copy math (they generally arrive two months before release). Then I get an e-mail from Writerspace, which hosts my site, asking if I want a chat for my "October" release.

Uh...October release?

I start to scramble, and realize I have totally missed this boat. I find my review on Romantic Times, an issue I didn't save because hey, I didn't have a book out in October, so I had just tossed it when it arrived. There went that PR clipping. I get my website updated quick. But now any other pre-promo I might have normally instituted is gone, because it's...

October already. Ah well. At least I can tell my pals at Cigars, and hope that when my two December books come out I'll be better prepared ;-).

Or maybe not. I might still be playing catch-up, LOL. So tell me, have you ever been caught unawares or surprised? A birthday you totally forgot (like a kid's or loved one's)? Had to scramble after the fact to make up for something big?

I'll draw a winner from those who submit comments for a copy of MIRACLE ON CHRISTMAS EVE, my last year's Christmas story. Just give me a while to get it in the mail. I'm behind the eight-ball as it is! ;-)

LOL Shirley

Ah, how I wish for the day I have enough books coming out that I can lose track. *G*

But never fear, we'll get your cover up here today. ;)

I'm quite sure I've had to scramble, but I can't remember anything specific at the moment... maybe, like on a day when I look at the Cigars calendar to find who's supposed to be blogging that day and it's ME. LOL

Have a good one,

Sam

Thanks, Sam!

You'll have to lift it from Amazon if you don't mind -- editorial and art department still hasn't given it to me. Apparently I'm not the only one behind the curve ;-)

Hi Shirley

Yes I have had those times that I have had to scramble around because of things I have forgotten. I have even forgotten my own wedding anniversary several times. Also birthdays of friends and family. So you are not alone on that.

Congrats on you new release!!!

Now I don't feel as bad :-)

Thanks for the congrats and the commiseration!

Birthday

I forgot my mom's birthday last month. I knew it was coming up and I figured I would have time to get a present, but then she came up to me and said it was her birthday the next day. Luckily I have a nice supply of birthday cards handy and I had to give her cash as a present. Pretty soon I'll be shopping for Christmas gifts.

I keep a supply...

On hand, too, for the same reason! I forget birthdays ALL the time. I'm the worst friend ever

Behind the Eight Ball

I'm always having to scramble when it comes to birthdays in my family. I can NEVER remember whose birthday is when. In fact I looked at the calendar this morning and realized my big brother's birthday was three days ago. And I think I have a great niece with a birthday next week. I'll look at the calendar but even if I get a card I'll never get it mailed in time. I'd think it was because of old age except I've always had this problem. I even forget my own birthday but I think that is deliberate.

LOL, Ellen!

After 25, I told my family I was done counting birthdays ;-). Now that I'm 40, I'm way done with the celebrating. Just give me the chocolate and call me 25 and I'll be happy!

I write birthdays and

I write birthdays and anniversaries on the calendar and they STILL sneak up on me.

We had to scramble to make 10 birthday cards

this past month. My sister usually has a get together to celebrate all the summer birthdays and it kept getting put off and we kept putting off making picture collages for the 10 birthdays. There is always time to do it -wrong. She phoned us one Saturday and said the get together was the next Saturday. My DH was going out of town for 2 days so we were both trying to find pictures and come up with ideas for 10 birthday collages. We got it done without dissappointing anyone but boy what a hassle. Now I have to check my October Birthday list because it's already here LOL.

Congratulations on the new surprise release-an early Christmas present for all of us.

Now I don't feel so bad! ;-)

Totally understandable!

And at least you didn't really forget a birthday or anything ;) I managed to completely forget a birthday party we'd committed to going to--earlier in the week, I'd made the mental note and thought about the present. That morning I remembered. That afternoon, I had this weird feeling that I might be forgetting something but couldn't for the life of me remember what. It struck me that night as I was cleaning up the kitchen around 10--way too late to call and apologize! I felt like a complete ding-a-ling, and the kids were crushed when I 'fessed up to what we'd missed. *sigh*

Congrats on your October release! (Enjoy those hospital diapers ;))

Oh that's awful!

Sorry you missed the party! We've done that a time or two -- our calendar gets SO full with two kids in lessons and sports and school things. It helps to have half our family living in another state ;-)

All of the time.

I am forgetful and a world class procrastinator. I miss birthdays, anniversaries and special occasions all the time. Thankfully, my family is both understanding and forgiving.

We had to get passports once in a hurry

as my DH who is a salesman won his way to a convention and we had let our passports lapse. Our family doctor had retired and we were scrambling to find someone authorized who had known us for five years to sign our passsport application.(This is in Canada). Regulations had changed since 9/11 and everybody was trying to get a passport at the same time it seemed. After all the hassle the convention was cancelled. We got our passports and we won't let them lapse again but what a nightmare at the time and we didn't get to go on a cruise.

LOL, Arkie and Kalee...but too bad...

About the cruise!! My sister ran into that with her passports and they had to do the speed way of getting them. Cost them a fortune.

What a surprise Shirley but

What a surprise Shirley but a nice one anyway.
Congrats on the book release. I love Christmas and stories around the holiday.

I usually find myself scrambling when unexpected company calls that they are coming that very day; then I need to get some serious putting away of items we leave out when by ourselves such as newspapers, bills, a DVD or two that we watched the night before perhaps. Yikes, I know what it is like. Take care.

Thanks, Buddy!

We do that a lot to ourselves -- we make last-minute plans and then do the hurry scramble to clean the house. It's the best way to get stuff done though, LOL.

Christmas Weddings

Hi,

I have read Christmas Weddings, as I had won a UK edition and loved all three stories.

I have not until know forgotten any birthdays, and I hope it won't happen soon either!

Thanks so much, Nathalie!

I'm glad you enjoyed it! And you're ahead of me, LOL! ;-)

Congratulations Shirley

Congratulations Shirley on your new release. I felt the same as you when I had my second child since it was a few days before Christmas and I had a two year old at home and I also worked. But the worst oops moments were when I would forget that my children lost a tooth and had them sitting under their pillow. I was probably the worst tooth fairy ever.

I used to do that ALL the time!

We'd stick the dollar in a cereal box or something and tell the kids that the Tooth Fairy thought they might be awake and she didn't want them to see her, so she put the money someplace else. Sigh. I am a bad tooth fairy too :-).

I think I should be scared...

...with all this talk of feeling not ready when your child is born and Christmas sneaking up on you... Our first kiddo is due Christmas day!! This isn't a sign or something, is it? LOL!

I actually do great for birthdays. They just stick in my head and are there. I put them on the calendar, too, so DH can see them. Now, I don't always get cards or things on time, but I know the day is coming so I can at least say "Happy Birthday" on the day! What I struggle with are deadlines - whether imposed by me or others. They sneak up on me like you wouldn't believe!! Even if they are on the calendar. So it seems that no matter how far in advance I know about something, I'm always doing it at the last minute. Suddenly that deadline is here...

Wow! That's a birthday...

That will be hard to forget! :-) Congrats!

Congrats!

Congrats on the new book... It must be nice to have many releases in a year, and forgetting a release date is normal when in each country the book is published at a different date!

I never forget a birthday or major event, however once my aunt/godmother called me 2 weeks after my birthday and told me she had completely forgotten my brithday... I was sad that she had not called, and even a bit shocked that she had forgotten, but I guess these things happen!

She must be related...

to me, LOL!
