Switchin' on the Blog... Welcome Stephanie Tyler!
Hey Cigar readers!!! It’s great to be here again, and the timing’s quite perfect, since I’ve got a new Blaze out everywhere in March (oh, and it’s available only at eHarlequin for the month of February if you just can’t wait that long.) The book is called, Beyond His Control, and it’s the third book in my SEAL series. The books, the first two of which are Coming Undone and Risking It All, are all stand-alones, btw, so although the characters pop up in each other’s books, you could pick up Beyond His Control even if you haven’t read the other two first.
Anyway, I saw a lot of people doing this meme over the past couple of weeks and I thought it would be a fun way to let new readers know what to expect from my books. And for those who’ve read me before, feel free to chime in if I’ve left anything out!
10 ways you know a book was written by Stephanie Tyler:
1) It will contain a military man – usually a Navy SEAL. Or several. Because you can’t have too many men around who can save the world and get the girl at the same time. Trust me on this one.
2) There will be a lot of use of the words fuck (in all its many incarnations) and Jesus Christ. I can’t help it – I think fuck is one of the best and most versatile words on the planet. Plus, I like my men (and women) to be realistic in their language and if cursing fits their characters, I won’t hold back. However, it might be tough to find the following phrases in the Blazes, as they tend to get edited out. I do believe I’ve snuck in several curses over the past three books. Jesus Christ, however, seems to get changed to like, god almighty or something. However, in my Bantam SEAL series, coming in 2009, there is generous, unedited glorious use of all these words at the appropriate times. Of which there are many.
3) There will be emotional angst. Lots of it.
4) I lean heavily toward sarcasm in my work – I tend to never think of anything I write having any aspect of funny so it always surprises me when someone mentions my books and humor in the same breath.
5) There will be some aspect of someone trying to maintain control. (FYI, Larissa pointed this out to me and she’s right – it’s been an ongoing theme in many of my stories.)
6) There will be sex scenes – steamy, sometimes explicit, and said sex scenes will always be a major part in the story, no matter how short they are.
7) There will be at least one oddly named person in the book. (well, odd according to Larissa – I think the names I choose are perfectly normal.)
8) There will be a reference to songs, most likely classic rock like AC/DC or Motley Crue or some other band like that.
9) One or more characters will be scarred physically and it’s not always the men. This is mainly a tribute to my daughter, the strongest person I know.
10) More often than not, Africa will be mentioned or utilized as a setting. Zoo (my husband) grew up there and I’ve been a couple of times and I just love it – it’s beautiful and peaceful and if I could be sure that I would have uninterrupted internet service, I would move there. Actually, Zoo and I do plan on moving there for a while at some point, but don’t tell my mother, because I’m not allowed to take her grandchild that far away. Ever.

Welcome to Cigars, Steph!
Wow, that was a lively list! LOL And congrats on the Bantam series -- more Seals, woo! :)
Scenes in Africa... that sounds wonderful -- which part? My friend went there, to South Africa, and loved it.
I do enjoy books with military characters because I enjoy action-oriented books -- I like strong people doing strong things, though I also enjoy a complex plot and lots going on besides a romance. One of the reasons I like Suz Brockmann's books, and it sounds like yours are following in that tradition. :)
Happy to have you here! :) Mega-hot cover on that Blaze, btw!
Sam
Hi Sam - Thanks again (to
Hi Sam -
Thanks again (to all of you guys) for having me here!
My husband was born in East Africa - Tanzania - his aunt still lives in Dar and she runs a hunting safari camp in the Selous. (I doubt I spelled that right :) So we've traveled all around Tanzania - just beautiful. Can't wait to go back!
And yes, Suz Brockmann is just amazing :) Love her stuff!
Themes
Hi, Steph -
I also like loss of control themes, because I think that delves deeply into a character's psyche...those stories we tell ourselves to function in the world. When they disappear, or get shattered...great angst, conflict, and motivation! BTW, your fave swears are mine, too! ;)
Margaret
Hi Margaret! You've got
Hi Margaret!
You've got great tast in swears :):) Thanks for stopping by the say hi! And yeah, there's so much involved with the loss of control theme, so many different ways to play it...I guess that's why I keep returning to it!
Meant to say...
The Harlequin editing thing is so random... I don't think I have had "God" "Jesus Christ" etc edited out, and I have had a few "fucks" including one in a love scene, and I've seen plenty of them in other Blazes but I did have "pussy" edited out, and the worst was when I wanted to say someone had been "fucked over" and the copyedit or whoever changed it to "screwed over" and it was like NO -- there is no such phrase as "screwed over" and luckily they changed it -- but I have never had any of the "blasphemes" taken out, and yet I know a lot of people who have... who can say? But yes, must be refreshing in mainstream not to have to deal with that -- I hope I get to find out, though on average, I don't think I have my characters curse all too much... just when they need to, LOL.
Sam
I noticed that I got to
I noticed that I got to sneak in more on the second and third Blazes...but I do tend to use a lot of swears, so the editing is probably a good idea for me :0
You've never heard "Screwed over"?
We use that by the pound out here. It's the kid equivalent, lol. Rather like "Screw you"...again, fun to use, lol.
Dee
You're right...
Damn. I have to be remembering wrong then... it was in Fascination, but I can't remember what it was... checking requires standing, so that will have to wait. But now it's bugging me... I fixed it, didn't let them use "screw" because it was really awkward, but it had to be something other than over... It was in a Locke scene, so I'll find it... it's going to drive me nuts now...

Loving the navy seals
I just read a book with a navy seal as the main charater and loved it. It made me want to go get a other one with a military man, there is just something about them. I pretty much am open to any type of book, as long as it sounds good I will read it. The only types of books I couldn't get into are the ones like Angels and Demons. They just don't get my interest. I love a good mystery. I'm always trying to find new mystery writers. It is like after you read one author you start to get a feel for there writing and can guess who the killer is. I like to be surprised at the end. I like books with a little bit of danger in it. But all in all I just love to read. It is the time I get to escape from reality.
five by five - It's the best
five by five -
It's the best when you're reading along and think you know who did it and and you find yourself completely wrong and surprised :) And of course, I agree with you about military men - I love it when new milrom books come out!
Howdy Stephanie!
I'm loving seeing you guys over here on Cigars!
First off, LOVE your cover. That is one YUMMY torso. :)
Second, oddly, most of my books have characters with commitment issues. LOL! I loved how you not only know your facets, you know why your books have them. I can't even figure out why I fold my clothes the way I do.
Then again, I don't really fold my clothes these days, lol.
Dee
Hey Dee! I'm really happy
Hey Dee!
I'm really happy with this cover myself :)
And OMG, I'm surprised you have time to breathe with the twins and your son - I love stopping by your blog to see all the pictures - they're getitng so big so fast!
Hi Stephanie
My very first Blaze was Coming Undone and it is still my absolute favorite!!! What can I say I love a good military man story!!
Kendra
Aw, Kendra, you totally made
Aw, Kendra, you totally made my day with that commment! CU is such a special book for me, my very first sale :)
Hi Stephanie
I like stories where people are trying to maintain control, too. There's just something about a sensual tight ass that keeps me reading, if you know what I mean.
I'll be picking up your March Blaze for sure!
Hi Jeannie! I know exactly
Hi Jeannie!
I know exactly what you mean...we've talked about this on Writeminded a lot too...we kind of love the whole, men who are so totally resistant, because they fall the hardest...love those alphas.
Oh, and I love your current cover - I've been really liking covers that just feature the heroes lately...
Navy Seals and More
Steph -
I popped over from Writeminded to say "Hi!" and don't include me in the drawing because I've already downloaded Beyond His Control and loved it! I just want to whole heartedly agree that there can never be enough men who can save the world and get the girl at the same time. You write a mean Navy Seal!
I think you don't see the humor in your stories because you have such a deep sense of who your characters are and to you they're just being themselves in every situation you write. As the reader, we get the pleasure of enjoying their immature petty moments, some stress induced ranting, some very appropriate and some unnecessary for alpha male posturing and great abs - always great abs! I find a lot of humor in your stories but that comes because you remain very true to your characters.
Your list is dead on - although I can't recall any strange names or a character name that even registered unusual. Which is the long way of me saying I like the stories with military heroes and I completely get being not being able to give up control. Other then that - it's paranormal - vampires - exorcists - hunters - slayers - all good night time fun. So for me, you're an author that fills both needs.
*waves to Audrey J* You're
*waves to Audrey J*
You're such a doll for letting me know you like BHC! I can't tell you how good it is to hear that, especially because I'm in the middle of writing a proposal that I'm convinced sucks :)
And I love your theory about why I don't see the humor in my own stories...I always call myself a character driven writer (versus plot driven because plot is scaaary)...
I think more of the strange names come with the Croft books...
I gotta agree on the swearing...
It makes the characters so much more real. I absolutely love it when I come across cursing in Blazes and I will literally "woo hoo" out loud because I'd much rather read an honest to goodness vulgar outburst than one downplayed with milder wording. When I'm pissed (or even when I'm talking normally...I've got a potty mouth LOL!), I let it rip and I think characters should be given that liberty, too. And in Blaze...um, if we can use frank words for genitalia (two specific 'c' words come to mind), why can't we curse like sailors?
Whew...soapbox moment there. Sorry! :)
Anyway, I prefer books with strong, aggressive heroes, heroines who are far from perfect, and hot, burn-your-fingers-on-the-pages sex. That's why I love Blaze so much! :)
And, Steph, you have no idea how happy I am that March is near. I have been waiting for Justin's story FOREVER!! :) Risking It All is one of my favorite Blazes (man I find myself saying that a lot on here!) and I fell head over heels in love with Cash. Can't wait to do the same with Justin!
Hi Sassa! I've got to say,
Hi Sassa!
I've got to say, Blaze has been really good about letting us use more frank sexual terms...I have a feeling the Jesus Christ thing could come across as more offensvie to people than certain other words, if that makes sense.
And yes on the heroines who are far from perfect!
And now you're making my day with your comments about Risking It All - seriously, you have no idea how good this all is to hear today as I'm bashing myself over my proposal.
I think you'll like Justin - he was fun to write :)
Favorite books
I like all kinds of books such as ones with wounded heroes or heroines, romantic suspense, romances where friends turn to lovers, heroes who are tough guys like cops, firefighters or soldiers. I can go on and on.
Hey Maureen - Oh, I really
Hey Maureen -
Oh, I really like the wounded heroes / heroines (literally wounded - like with bullets and stuff :)...the whole healing thing makes for such emotional stories!
You took words out of my mouth
I like all those types of books and heroes Maureen mentioned. I also have a thing for nerdy heroes, too.
Hi Minna! I don't think I've
Hi Minna!
I don't think I've read too many with nerdy heroes...I love my alphas - any recs for good nerdy hero books for me to try?
nerdy hero books
Let's see... Nora Roberts had a nerdy hero in Three Sisters Island-trilogy (hopefully I remembered the name of the correct trilogy here, she has so many of them), Vicki Lewis Thompson has quite a few books with nerdy heroes, and not just the ones with the word "Nerd" attached to the title and I think Julie Cohen has one nerdy hero book, but I haven't had the chance to read it yet. And if you want to see nerdy heroes and heroines in movies or tv-series I recommend Young Einstein, Bones and Numb3rs (maths has never looked so good). And you can find a long list of nerd movies from Vicki Lewis Thompson's homepage.
Thanks, Minna! I'm going to
Thanks, Minna!
I'm going to check some of these out :)
Another hot cover!
Hi, Stephanie! That's another gorgeous cover to drool over :)
I do love a good military romance (there something so appealing about those uniforms, and all that carefully buttoned down power that's oh-so-incredible when loosed!) I also love friends-to-lovers stories, and am a sucker for reunions.
Africa? That sounds so exotic to me, and I do love stories set where I might otherwise never have a chance to go!
Thanks for the fun get-to-know-you today!
Hey Fedora! Glad you liked
Hey Fedora!
Glad you liked the list - it was fun to write :)
You know, I'm not a huge reunion story fan (well, writing them, I should say - this book nearly killed me) - mainly because I love love LOVE letting the characters fall in love for that first time...but I do find the reunited lovers stories very romantic...
Hi Steph! Just have to say,
Hi Steph! Just have to say, "SEALS!!!" Can't wait to read the new one!
LOVED this list!!!
I like all types of themes and read everything romance, but one of my all-time faves that will get me to buy a book every time is the friends-to-lovers theme.
JenniferY!!!!!!!!!! When we
JenniferY!!!!!!!!!!
When we meet in person, we're not going to say hello, we're just going to scream - SEALs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
LOL!!!!
My all time favorite friends to lovers story is When Harry Met Sally :)
LOL!!! I will probably be
LOL!!! I will probably be too nervous to say anything to you...and you can blame the "SEALS!" thing on Larissa...she is the one who got me started saying it...LOL.
After reading all these posts the last few days I think I am going to have to do a Writeminded read-a-thon...LOL.
You're not allowed to be
You're not allowed to be nervous around me! We'd have a blast...trust me :)
LOL @ Writeminded read-a-thon!
I'll Have Numbers 1 and 6
Hi Stephanie,
I loved your first two SEAL books. I absolutely agree with your statement about the word fuck. It's such a powerful word, yet it can be used in jest too. It might not always be appropriate, but sometimes all you need is that one word. Have you ever been on a safari, visited the Serengeti or Victoria Falls? I've always wanted to do those things.
*waves to Jane* Making my
*waves to Jane*
Making my day yet again :) Thanks for letting me know you enjoyed the first Blazes!
I have been on Safari - the first trip was my honeymoon and we went all through the Serengeti, Lake Tanganika, the crater, etc. We didn't get to Victoria Falls that trip...we did make it to Zanzibar. For the second trip, we drove through to see where my husband was born in Songea and we ended up at Ruaha Safari camp, which was amazing. I always tell people that if you get the opportunity, you need to go - it's the coolest thing to wake up, look out your window and literally have an elephant RIGHT THERE eating from the tree above where you're sleeping...
If I can ever get my scanner to work properly, I'll upload my safari pics to my website...I'm hoping to do that soon!
SEALs are good, but
I'm a sucker for Cinderella stories, friends to lovers and mistaken identities. And if I can get it all in one story - yipee!
-Tasha
Hi Tasha! Oh, Cinderella
Hi Tasha!
Oh, Cinderella stories are very cool - especially ones that put such an awesome spin on them - I'm always reminded of the movie with Drew Barrymore - Ever After - I used to show it to my students when I taught because she was so strong, not just waiting around for her prince...
Mistaken identity stories are always a lot of fun too!
Wow
That is a fabulous list! I am so impressed that you recognize the reoccurring themes and points in your books *g* My list would be more like, hmm, there is a hero and a heroine. hmm... well, thats it. I'm so NOT good at analyzing anything, but especially my own work.
I love the tribute you include in your writing to both your daughter and your husband - what a wonderful gift to your family :)
Hi Tawny! I can analyze it,
Hi Tawny!
I can analyze it, but can't read it :) By the time the galleys come, it's like torture...
I hear you!
But I think of it as torture because by galley time, I'm SSSSOOOOOOOO sick of the story, that I can't wait to be finished. I always thought I'd be so excited to hold my own book in my hands, flip the pages, read it. So far the thrill has only gone as far as holding them LOL
LOL - I will never be able
LOL - I will never be able to read a finished book of mine. For a while, even when my author copies came, I couldn't look at them. Larissa would laugh - she rolls around in hers and I would hide mine because I couldn't look at them. It was so nerve-wracking. But I'm better - I can actually keep the box in the same room with me now :)
I enjoy military, cowboy and
I enjoy military, cowboy and law enforcement themes.
I also use the same swear words you use.
Hey Estella! Cowboys are
Hey Estella!
Cowboys are veery nice :)
You've got excellent taste in swear words - LOL!
Reading Themes
Hi Stephanie - It's interesting to learn your top 10 about your books. I haven't read any of your books, but the sound of it sounds great especially when they're about Navy Seals. :) I will have to add them to my list to check it out. I like reading action-related, adventure, and on the beach or water-related. I also agree with Maureen mentioned about the wounded heros/heroines.
Hi acdaisy77! I love beach
Hi acdaisy77!
I love beach and/or water related stories - maybe because I used to swim competitively so I kind of grew up in the water:) And, you know, that's where the SEALs are...
Thanks so much for saying hi!
Hi Stephanie!
I like your list, especially 1, 6 and 8! No nerdy heroes for me, only gorgeous alpha males...
I've read your first "Coming Undone",loved it, and now I've to find "Risking It All" before I can grab this one. But it will be on my TBBlist, you can be sure of that!
Hey embla! I'm so happy to
Hey embla!
I'm so happy to hear you loved CU! And yeah, I'm an alpha girl...looking at Minna's list, I do remember some Nora's I read that I liked (Angels Fall comes to mind)- she does betas quite nicely.
But I think I'd find them hard to write...
Opposite - very different
Opposite - very different careers/activities from each other and/or personality types to some extent. Keeps things interesting yet balanced. Does that make sense? And sometimes I just want to get right into the story/relationship so a couples that already knew each other before the first page is exactly what I'm looking for!
Hi Allison - That makes
Hi Allison -
That makes total sense - in fact, my editor and I were just talking about this. She mentioned Laura Kinsdale as someone who does that really well...
And yes, I did find with Beyond His Control, since the h/h had a past, the action could just kind of get moving without the whole, getting to know you, thing.
Yes, definitely looking
Yes, definitely looking forward to Ava and Justin's story. Meant to say that too in my original post...
I love me some Military
I love me some Military Men!!! :)
