Indulgences

Tawny Weber's picture

I adore indulgences. A pint of Ben & Jerry's Everything But..., a long, hot bubble bath and an even hotter romance novel, a pomegranite margarita from my fave Mexican restaurant. Ahhhh, they are all sweet. And all the sweeter because I rarely get them LOL. But hands down, one of my absolute favorite indulgences are facials.

Usually I get a facial for a birthday treat, or a special occasion reward (I treated myself to a deluxe facial when I signed with my agent). They are one of those decadent, just for me things that are hard to justify but feel soooo good. Unlike my obsession with shoes - which are a necessity. Shoes, like caffeine, keep me going. But facials are harder to justify (often costing as much as a nice pair of shoes, shoes sit there in my closet waiting to be admired.) But now... I am so freaking excited! My daughter is following family tradition and going to Beauty School. Unlike her grandma and I, though, she's only studying the esthiticians course. Translation? Mom gets weekly facials! Woot!

Welcome, indulgence. A part of me wonders if, like anything enjoyed too often, they'll lose their charm and become mundane. Somehow I am doubting it LOL. But if they do, well, hey, I'm willing to suffer through the process until then.

How about you? Now that I've shared my favorite indulgence (and revealed that I'm going to be very spoiled for awhile-at least until she's sick of practicing on my face) What's your favorite indulgence? It could be a once in awhile thing, a only did it once but OMG it was sooo good, or even a daily thing you do that makes you feel Soooooooo good?

C'mon... sharesies..

My favorites...

Soy chai lattes from Starbucks for a quickie. If I have a whole afternoon I go to a local coffee shop with a book or something different/new to work on and get out of the house and my regular routine. Naps are an almost-daily indulgence for me, especially in the winter.

Mmmmm

Love the tea and a book indulgence, but I have at to say, the nap sounds even better :-)

Tawny, I can't decide!! I

Tawny, I can't decide!! I love pedicures, but only get them a couple of times a year. I also love lounging on a chaise, under a sun umbrella, with a really good book and a tall glass of something delicious, like a strawberry margarita or even a raspberry iced tea. I guess those are my summer indulgences! In the winter, I'm more about food. :-)
There's a little restaurant I love going to that's right on the water. The food is fabulous, there's always a fire in the fireplace, and the views are amazing. I could sit there all afternoon and be completely content. It's pricey, so we only go occasionally.

One word: Cake

I am a cake-a-holic, though I don't have it except for special occasions (okay, maybe a few times in between) but I really love good cake. Not so much box cake or grocery store cake (though I can settle in a pinch) but we have several Italian and other good bakeries here and they have lovely cakes. I seek out cake -- remember the picture of the Junior's cheesecake I had in NYC, and I often find great cakes down there. I turn 45 this weekend, and we'll have two cakes -- one chocolate, home made, and one raspberry lemon, from the bakery, and really, I'm excited thinking about the cakes! :) No ice cream (I'm lactose intolerant), but bring on the cake!

Sam

Oh, yeah...

I like a good turtle cheesecake, too. (Thanks, Sam...now I'm hungry!)

Happy Birthday!!

Happy Birthday, Sam!! Wishing you all good things for the coming year!

Thanks...

If it starts out with two kinds of cake, it can't go wrong, the way I see it, LOL.

Sam

It's your Birthday?

Well, where's the Happy Birthday thread? :)

Happy Birthday, Sam!! :)

Well, it's Sunday...

So didn't want to do it then, but figured Tawny wouldn't care if I budged into her "indulgences" thread since it's on a theme. ;)

I am a big birthday fan -- I never get why people don't like them. I mean, where's the bad? Gifts, food, cake... so you get a year older, so what? Better than if you didn't make it that year, right? ;) LOL

This is the POV you get when you have a Dad near 90... ;>

Sam

Happy BirthdayTo Sam!!

I LOVE birthdays :-) I adore the Princess For A Day theme (hey, isn't that everyones birthday theme???) and presents and cake! All good stuff. The year older thing I ignore *g*

HappyHappy day to you!! I hope you have a fabulously indulgent one, and hey, two cakes... you're off to a great start :-)

Why decide?

Go for the gusto, Karen! Indulge all over the place LOL. I looooove mani/pedi's too - altho more often than not its just a pedi since I mangle my nails typing. I'm so into the image of the chaise, sun and margarita!! YUM, relaxation!! The fireplace sounds good too! (can you tell I'm cold?)

I think you've got a great handle on your indulgences :-D I might borrow a couple, just to try out ;-)

Lots of favorite indulgences...

...but unfortunately not a lot of time to...well, indulge in them. I love a cozy chai tea and a yummy strawberry margarita, too (go Margaret and Karen!). Or a really steamy book. Getting my hair done is at the top of my list, especially the blow drying part. Hmm, scented candles at a favorite, too. Oh, and quiet time to write on Lake Michigan--that's always nice.

I could on, but I'll save some space for others! :)

Fab list!

Way to go, Sassa! You've got a fab list of indulgences, it sounds like you just need a little time to enjoy them LOL.

You know, as much as I'm into the girly fun of manis/pedis/facials, getting my hair done always makes me impatient. Totally weird, huh?

I love the image of writing on a lake - that must be soooo peaceful and inspiring. Now thats a great indulgence, one that sparks your creativity!

I love massages and facials

I love massages and facials and I don't get them very often but they relax me. 2 years ago I made a resolution to have a manicure every 2 weeks, you know it was the only resolution I was able to keep.

Oh massages...

When they're good, they're great. There's a place locally that has these heated tables, and then before the massage they put this very heavy, heated blanket over your whole body, and it's like being a hot sandwich... I purrrr. The last time after the massage I was so jelly-like I couldn't drive home, LOL, and had to have dh do it...

Sam

The best kind of resolution...

one that makes YOU feel good! I love that, Beth! I think we're so gung-ho to "fix" ourselves when we set resolutions, that most people don't think to focus on the really important things, like making themselves feel great :-)

Free Practice!

Your daughter can practice her facials on me! Ya, know, just to work with a different type of skin. All professional.

I used to love getting manicures and pedicures but, since moving to MD, they pale in comparison to the ones in NY. (I have my cousin's wedding in April in NY, I plan to make an appointment)

My husband is a firm believer in little indulgences. He believes that big indulgences are great but, daily life needs them, too. Every few months, we like to get Roy Roger's Fried Chicken. We're both on restrictive diets so, for us, that is a treat.

Yoo Hoos! I love the occasional Yoo Hoo. A taste from my childhood.

Lets hear it for the little indulgences!

I love your husbands belief system LOL - There is nothing like those little indulgences to keep the spirits lifted, huh?

Okay, now I'm curious. Whats the difference between an indulgent manicure and a comparitively pale version? Paraffin? massage? techinique? (hmmm, is this like the difference between okay sex and awesome sex? LOL)

Pale-ish manicure

I think it comes down to technique. Doesn't everything? They all use the same products so, it has to be technique. Heck, we used to get coupons to a manicurist school on Long Island and they did a better job then the 'professionals' here in Maryland.

Yes, the pizza and bagels are better in NY, too!

I don't know if a lot of males would agree but, sometimes, quality is better than quantity! :-)

ROFL

Oh yeah, I'm on the quality over quantity page with you!!!

and Tecnnique is definitely what its all about, in all things *beg*

now I want pizza and a manicure, though LOL

Woohoo!

Wow, Tawny! That's AWESOME!! Maybe the novelty will wear off after a bit, but until then, you can just relax and enjoy it!!!! Ahhhhh....

Happy birthday, Sam!! MMmmm--CAKE!!

I do love mani-pedis--I've had, let's see... a total of three? I haven't even made time to paint my own nails in at least a year, so even that would be good :)

I also love candy and other sweets, and sadly, do give into that indulgence that far more often.

And of course, books!!!

Books, the most awesome indulgence!

I love books, too, Fedora :-) And somehow, they are even more fun to read while indulging in sweets LOL.

Methinks you need to treat yourself to a mani/pedi! It sounds like you're definitely due!

and yeah, I'm soooo ready to relaz and enjoy while the novelty wears thin *g*

Chocolate eclairs and lazy hotel stays

I love to stay in hotels. I think it must have been because it was such a treat when I was a kid. Usually on vacation we went to my grandparents or we went tent camping. Ack. Many, many traumas I can pull story ideas from over the horrors of tent camping in a large canvas non-waterproof tent while trying to stay warm in a smurf sleeping bag. Anyway, I love hotels. I love having clean sheets and towels. I love sleeping in a large bed where I get most of the space instead of my animals. I love being able to order room service. I love watching the cable channels I don't have at home. Mostly, I love the maid.

My other favorite indulgence are chocolate eclairs. Not the 3 point Weight Watcher kind - the kind that that are a bazillion points and you can see the custard oozing out the ends and chocolate drips over the sides. And I don't want a quarter or a half. When I indulge I eat the whole fatty, yummy, chocolatey delicious thing.

Anyone else feeling warm?

Okay, I'm back now. Thanks for the fun and Happy Birthday Sam!

Facials!!! Love them! It's my fav indulgence although lately I haven't been able to swing it financially. But I agree, it's a wonderful indulgence.

Great taste

Kimberly - glad to find another facial fiend :-)

I hear you on the expense, thats why they have always been a special treat. My mom used to get me a gift certificat for my birthday. I always love the little lecture on "you might get some breakouts due to the toxins being pulled to the surface, but with regular facials that will be eliminated." Hahahaha, is once a year regular?

Of course, even though her school pays for most of it, when I think of what all the extra courses my daughter wants to take (anyone ever heard of eyelash extensions?) in the end, these weekly facials might end up costing me a ton!

You're making my mouth water

Man, now I want an eclair!!! YUMMMMMY Natasha!

Of course, after your description, I want the eclair served to me in a luxury hotel room by room service LOL.

GREAT indulgences!!

(btw -tents... ICK!)

Tasha, I totally agree with

Tasha, I totally agree with you! I used to do a lot of traveling with my job, and even though I missed my husband and babies, I totally adored staying in nice hotels and having the bed all to myself...cable channels where I controlled the remote...and room service! Actually, five years of non-stop traveling was how I wrote my first several books. I'd curl up on that big bed with something delicious to eat on the bedside table, and a chick flick on television, and just write my heart out. Pure heaven...

An hour or two of

An hour or two of uninterrupted Queer as Folk or Supernatural for me. Or a few hours playing the Sims 2.

Yeah!

My daily indulgence is

My daily indulgence is reading at night in bed when all is quiet. My splurge indulgence is getting away with a friend to a casino and playing the slots lol.

FUN indulgences

Catslady, I'm with you on the reading in bed. Although thats more like a ritual for me, along the lines of brushing my teeth LOL - its a daily thing that I do automatically. The splurge indulgence sounds fun!

Massage

A massage does wonders for the body and mind. They're pretty expensive so I don't indulge often. Maybe I should think about getting a massage chair from Brookstone, preferably one with a foot massage. I'm always tempted by those $10 massages that they offer in the mall.

Just say ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

I saw that chair, Jane and was sooooo tempted too. I put it on my holiday list but it didn't land under my trea :-(

Massages are great indulgences, and like you say, pricey, so I rarely treat myself. I have a fantasy about a spa weekend, complete with facial, massage, mani/pedi... the works. My birthday is the end of the month... Hmmmmm, maybe if I start hinting now...
